Perm, Russia

I completed an internship in Perm, Russia at Perm State University. We studied the bio-catalytic technologies and microbial biodiversity of bacteria in extreme environments. Classical microbiology and biochemistry techniques as well as modern molecular genetics were used in experiments. I used various cell immobilization techniques to obtain biocatalysts. The project aims were to develop understanding of the mechanisms of microbial survival in environments with extreme conditions and to develop new forms of immobilised biocatalysts. Along side the lab project, I was also able to experience Russian culture. I had Russian lessons several times a week whilst I was there, went to see the Russian ballet and also tried Russian food. Overall a great experience to learn new techniques and about Russian culture.
