Part of the initial community-based team that conceptualized the development of the Pico Union’s Belmont Zone of Choice with the Local Superintendent and the Director of the Belmont Zone of Choice. Responsible for organizing parents and community-at-large in support of secondary reform specifically dealing with the Belmont Zone of Choice Pilot Schools initiative. Specific responsibilities included:•Worked closely with the Parent Institute for Quality Education (PIQE); The Central American Resource and Educational Center (CARECEN); Alliance for Better Communities (ABC)•Conducted community meetings with various stakeholder groups to inform them of the Pilot Schools instructional school reform initiative.•Organized community not-for-profit groups, elected officials, college and university representatives, members of the business community, and organizations of faith to form the Belmont Educational Collaborative in the Pico Union community.•Sponsored professional development workshops on behalf of the school district for educators, parents, students, and community-at-large to build capacity related to secondary school reform Pilot Schools initiative •Provided the forum for direct dialogue between Local District staff and the community.

Administered Los Angeles Trade Technical College program known as Learning Anytime Neighborhood College Noncredit Program, aimed at creating learning opportunities beyond the college campus for community members of the Pico-Union area surrounding Belmont High School. Responsibilities included meeting with students, parents, members of non-profit organizations and other interested community members to identify courses of interest that met the needs of the community. Recruited teachers, found class locations, and oversaw all aspects of the off-campus noncredit class program.Over time, developed a keen sense for troubleshooting potential situations in order to prevent problems from becoming inhibitors to the success of the students in the program. Working for LATTC gave me the opportunity to become an important link between the K-12 public school system, families and the community colleges. This linkage has played a major role in my ability to engage at-risk students in pursuing coursework that leads to an Associate Degree, a possibility that many students did not envision for themselves. Worked closely with the college’s public information office in organizing community events and staging press conferences in the community.
