For 7 winters, I drove a delivery truck around the great city of Chicago installing outdoor Christmas decorations all over the city. It was weeks of 16-20 hour days of driving and pushing and pulling and lifting out in the Chicago elements.I got to see parts of the city’s iconic buildings that people rarely see.The back alleys that lead to the loading docks; a world of their own. The service elevators, always hidden away from view, and we all know why. The working class pecking order and also camaraderie that starts with the dock supervisor to the freight elevator operator to the endless stream of immigrants, like me. Like me, only they worked more than me and anyone else I saw coming out of the regular elevators. They had crossed borders and rivers to get here. They were guys and girls who worked twice as hard, made half as much, and paid the toll with their bodies and twice with their lives. When I started working in advertising, I swore to myself to not ever lose all the perspective I had gained in all those years. (I mean that in two ways.)So... here’s trying.
