Currently, I am working on developing my data analytics skills. It's one of the ways I am making it up to my younger self. See, as a Freshman in High School, I took 3 math classes. Then, as the only Sophomore in my AP Calculus class, I was asked if I wanted to study Mathematics beyond High School; I said no. I was under the assumption that it was too odd for a girl to pursue a STEM career. Luckily, I changed my mind, but as a first-generation child of immigrants (who also happens to be a queer, disabled, woman of color) I was hyper-aware of what society thought was "acceptable" and therefore required of me to fit in. I carry my difficult experiences with me and they allow me the unique opportunity to approach life with resilience, creativity, and most importantly, a great deal of empathy.After a turbulent college experience that was ultimately cut short as a result of the COVID pandemic, I found myself in customer-centered roles within the restaurant industry, where I worked as an expeditor optimizing the to-go order fulfillment processes and as a trainer instilling company standards onto new hires. I also have experience in education where I spent over 10 years as a tutor and 3 years as a science instructor implementing lesson plans with the goal of relaying complicated scientific information in an easily-digestible and relevant manner to elementary-aged children.My career in the restaurant industry seems like such a mismatch, given my education in Geophysics followed by Mathematics; and it is. I felt stuck for so long, weighed down as a result of life's circumstances. Now, I am excited to enter a field where I think I can make a real contribution to the betterment of society. My skills, combined with my love and talent for things mathematical and technical, have encouraged me to pursue a career in data science; my eventual goal is to enter the Ethical AI space.
