I am an advisor, professor and author with decades of experience in dispute resolution, consultancy, education and corporate governance. I am a WIPO Neutral for Arbitration of IP disputes.I have served as the legal advisor for the Health Sector Transformation Program, Saudi Arabia and SAIP (Saudi Authority for Intellectual Property). I held the first Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) Chair at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras, where I was actively involved in management, research and teaching of Intellectual Property (IP) for a term that coincided with IIT Madras repeatedly ranking as the best institution in India. I pioneered the online IP education in India using the NPTEL/Swayam where tens of thousands of students have enrolled. My courses helped them to pave a new career path and clear the Patent Agent Examination conducted by the Indian Patent Office.My legal career started as a contentious lawyer and led to the founding of a law firm focused on law and technology. I have advised various clients in different sectors like digital technologies such as Yahoo! Inc, media companies such as Kasturi and Sons, publishers of The Hindu newspaper, aviation companies like Blue Dart Aviation, pharmaceutical companies like Mylan Laboratories, chemical companies like Sud Chemie and automotive companies like TVS Motor Company. I have worked on patents in the fields of Pharmaceuticals and biotechnology (formulations, combinations, anti-virals, HIV protease inhibitors, new salt forms, anti-obesity drug, anti-cancer drug), Automotive, Lamination, Fertilizers, Cosmetics, Blenders, etc.My research expertise in patent law arises from my ability to understand law and technology, which has resulted in three books: The Law of Patents – With a Special Focus on Pharmaceuticals in India (LexisNexis), The Touchstone Effect – The Impact of Pre-grant Opposition on Patent (LexisNexis) and The Access Regime – Patent Law Reforms for Affordable Medicines (Oxford University Press). I have received research grants from the Government of India, DFID, Shuttleworth Foundation and Azim Premji Foundation. I have taught the course “Regulating AI” at the National Law School, where I am a visiting professor. My book chapter in the first book on AI and IP published by Oxford University Press titled “Digitalized Invention, Decentralized Patent System: The Impact of Blockchain and Artificial Intelligence on the Patent Prosecution”, became the foundation for my work on AI and digital transformation. I am the founder of two startups: Techgrapher and LexCampus.
