About Pat Finnegan
Pat's education background is in the music field where, at least for him and his mentors, "flipped classroom" learning has been the norm all along. Whether teaching individual instrument or vocal lessons, or directing a band or choir, his method has been to provide exposure to the repertoire piece or exercise first, and then provide the guidance needed to move the student toward mastery. While completing a BA in Music with an Education emphasis, Pat found support for these processes and began employing them to the other arts and science subjects he has taught. Now, as he moves forward with a Master's Degree in Educational Technology Leadership, these techniques are finding even more support and he is passionate about sharing them with his students and developing them with fellow educators.Pat is a member of the National Association for Music Education and is currently writing a book on the Practical Application of Music Theory.Pat is also the founder and owner of Turn-Turtle where he has developed educational media for online education using Adobe Creative Suite, Adobe eLearning Suite and Adobe Creative Cloud as well as TechSmith tools like SnagIt and Camtasia. Instructional Designer & Classroom Technologist
My primary job is to design and develop effective online and classroom learning experiences using engaging content, activities and assessments that maximize knowledge transfer and retention. Actually, I go a bit further up the levels of Blooms taxonomy and aim for complete comprehension, application, and synthesis levels for most of my courses. In other words - subject mastery. I often coordinate with a combination of subject matter experts, graphic artists and animators, audio / video crew and other designers. My company’s standard practice is both iterative and agile, most often using a blend of the SAM, ADDIE, and Rapid Prototyping models. Our general technique looks more like an iteratively-adapted ADDIE, however we often begin with a SAM "savvy start," and RP is our storyboarding process of choice. Our designs almost invariably apply advanced knowledge acquisition and memory transfer techniques that reflect our keen interest in current advances in educational neuroscience. In fact, we consider most of our development to be "boundary work" between the fields of cognitive psychology, educational neuroscience and traditional pedagogical / androgogical methodologies. We begin by working with the internal or external customer to identify their instructional goals and the specific needs of their target audience. We then work to plan and visualize the instructional graphics, user interface, and the final product. We conduct instructional research and analysis on learners and the unique aspects of their contexts. We apply the latest in tested instructional design theories, practice and methods to create exercises, activities, and assessments that enhance the learning process. The final product can be tailored to most LMS / LDS systems including those that adhere to SCORM, TinCan and AICC standards as well as those that don’t.
