Fiona W. Dunn is a local independent comic creator and illustrator whose work focuses on merging well-researched historical detail with fantasy worlds in order to make the fantastical seem tangible, and the mundane seem wondrous. Fiona grew up in Raleigh and attended Broughton High School and NC Governor’s School before going on to graduate from the Savannah College of Art and Design with a major in Sequential Art and a minor in Scientific Illustration.Fiona’s primary ongoing work is her webcomic, Verdancy, a medieval fantasy coming-of-age story with horror elements. Last year she worked as an illustrator on Martin Luther King Jr: A Graphic History of America’s Great Civil Rights Leader, part of the Great Lives graphic novel biography series, and in 2018 worked with the local Episcopalian Diocese to create More and More, a graphic bible study about welcoming outsiders into the community. In addition to her comics work, Fiona also enjoys creating art around fantasy concepts and the occasional botanical and scientific painting. Three of her illustrations based on Dungeons and Dragons franchise Critical Role were featured in Imurj’s July 2018 “Art of Fandom” exhibition.Outside of artwork, Fiona enjoys costuming, swing dancing, experimenting with baking and gardening, and attending historical reenactments with her partner, where she practices armored martial combat.
