Acting in a junior deck officer role saw me undertaking many different tasks, and supporting, as well as leading, many different operations. I was given the opportunity to act as navigator, co navigator, and administrations officer during bridge watches and manoeuvres, as well as leading mooring and anchoring operations. My emergency duties included command and control, and lifeboat leadership. I would also lead training sessions for crew members. I liaised with guests and ran celestial navigation talks, bridge tours, and chartwork sessions.

My first contract as relief 3/O has been a great challenge and a steep learning curve. I have learned many brand new things, such as sail setting, stowing, bracing, different types of maintenance for sails and rigging etc. I am grateful to have had this opportunity.

This job has eased me back into the maritime sector, and has been a different experience than I am used to. I have built up my boat handling skills, and have had an introduction to engine maintenance. My passenger liaison skills have also improved tenfold, as well as my local knowledge of the Solent.

I was responsible for maintaining cleanliness and good husbandry of the lounges. I would liaise with and assist all passengers, and take part in all drills. As a supernumerary crewmember I was able to shadow officers and gain a higher understanding of safety aspects of RoPax ferries. This contract inspired me to embark on the cadetship.

My first time living and working away from home was an eye opening experience. I worked in several different sectors including lifeguarding, funfair rides, restaurants, and bars. The training programme 'Roadmap' has proved most valuable in all aspects of my career, and is something I have remembered and used in every customer facing role I have undertaken.
