After finishing my post-doctorate fellowship, I became an associate researcher at the Menzies Institute for Medical Research. My work is mainly with the Blood Pressure Research Group. The primary research that I am involved with is the evaluation of the clinical outcomes and the economic impact of accurate blood pressure measurement.

I supported the IDEAL study (Improved cardiovascular Disease hEALth service delivery in Australia), where we developed a process to calculate the cardiovascular risk at the pathology service and to deliver the information to the General Practitioners to make well-informed medical decisions. We concluded that the calculation of the cardiovascular risk at the point of service was acceptable among middle-to-older adults and increased interest of guideline-directed care in general practice.I evaluated the clinical outcomes and economic impact of accurate blood pressure measurement. For this project, I learned health economics modelling using TreeAge software. I was the principal organiser and coordinator of the May Measurement Month in Southern Tasmania, a global campaign lead by the International Society of Hypertension and the World Hypertension League, during 2017 and 2018. We screened the blood pressure of more than 1500 people during these two years. This was a unique opportunity to engage with the community and to give them information about their blood pressure, including advice. As the coordinator of the campaign, I trained the volunteers that were needed to screen the blood pressure of participants. Other roles as postdoctoral fellow included co-supervision and support of PhD students.I use statistics (R Studio) extensively to analyse data and TreeAge software to do the health economic analysis and modelling.I presented research outcomes in national and international scientific conferences and published manuscripts in leading international medical journals.

I organised the chronic disease management plans and team care arrangements of people suffering from chronic conditions. I assessed the patients form a holistic perspective. My analysis gave the General Practitioners the tools for knowing their patients better and for maintaining a positive relationship to continue the improvement and conservation of their health. Additionally, I contributed to improving the health status of the community by doing health assessments and giving the required information after a brief evaluation of their health literacy. I mainly evaluated people older than 75 years of age. However, I also had the opportunity to do the health assessments of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders, people with risk of developing diabetes mellitus or cardiovascular disease, health assessments of people between 45 and 49 years of age, medical evaluation for driving licenses, diabetes cycle of care, and asthma cycle of care. Other responsibilities included to be the surgical assistant during minor surgical procedures and to sterilise the surgical equipment used during those procedures.

The main reason to be a Medical Observer in this private practice was to know more about the Australian Health System from the GP perspective and to continue with my re-entry to practice plan. I decided to be a Medical Observer at the Royal Hobart Hospital in the Cardiology department as part of my re-entry to practice plan. I attended daily ward rounds. After finishing the observership, I had a better understanding of the hospital system in Tasmania and the complexity of the diseases presented in this community. I saw firsthand the quality of professionals that work at the hospital. I also saw part of the University system used to teach medical students. In total, I completed fifty-seven hours of medical observership.

My topic of research was the appropriate use of cardiac imaging in Australia. During my PhD candidature, I published ten manuscripts in leading medical journals. I presented my research in important international meetings such as the European Society of Cardiology congress (2015 and 20156), the American College of Cardiology Scientific Session in 2016, the American Society of Echocardiography in 2014 and 2015, the Cardiac Society of Australia and New Zealand in 2016. I published my research manuscripts and a systematic review in leading international medical journals such as the American College of Cardiology, BMJ Open, the European Heart Journal cardiac imaging, and the international journal of cardiology, among others. My research has been cited by influential researchers around the world and in Australia, and it has guided guidelines and protocols for the appropriate use of cardiac imaging.
