I explore the relationships between ecological health, tourism and social security throughout Latin America and the Andes region in particular. The geography of the Andes range makes the people living there particularly susceptible to environmental changes, whether these can be tied directly to global warming or to other phenomena. How groups respond to these challenges, from the level of an entire country down to individual communities, have knock-on effects beyond immediate impact ranges and provide both negative and positive blueprints for future responses to climate change.

Laboratory Of Andrea Califano

I developed a novel high-throughput transcriptome sequencing pipeline called PLATE-Seq for constructing transcriptome libraries for expression sequencing. I analyzed PLATE-Seq data with the end goal of identifying master regulators of various disease phenotypes. Of particular interest were the master regulators of basal and luminal breast cancer and of neuroendocrine tumors. PLATE-Seq is slated for publication in Nature Communications and is now being adapted for use in a clinical setting as a means of providing detailed personal molecular diagnoses of complex diseases.

Hunter College, Nyc

I worked to identify previously unknown factors interacting with the T cell receptor α locus control region (TCRα LCR). I discovered a highly conserved region with no currently known transcription factor binding sites. Using biochemical techniques, I confirmed that as-yet-unknown proteins do interact with that conserved region. In a separate but related project, I worked to identify the minimal sequences necessary for full function of the TCRα LCR, with the goal of using this element in future gene therapy techniques.

Columbia University

Working under an HHMI undergraduate grant, I used biochemical techniques to identify the proteins associated with messenger ribonucleoproteins and the sites at which those proteins bound to a messenger RNA particle.

Cold Spring Harbor Laboratories

As part of Cold Spring Harbor's Undergraduate Research Program, I investigated possible tumorigenic capabilities of tumor-derived mutations in the tumor suppressor gene Chd5.

As a field medic, I provided acute and routine medical assistance to both soldiers and, when deployed, to members of the local population.
