No 16 Shaft - Rustenburg, South Africa

I was responsible for the engineering, procurement and construction management of all capital projects at 16 Shaft. These projects include the construction of large steel structures, changehouses, boxfront installations and the raiseboring of boxholes. The role included managing contractors on site and reviewing the work of consultant design engineers.

Marula Mine - Steelpoort, Limpopo

I was responsible for the engineering, procurement and construction management of all capital projects at Marula Mine. These projects included chairlift installation, conveyor belts, large steel structures, main ventilation fan station, boxfront installations and the raiseboring of a ventilation shaft. The role included managing contractors on site and reviewing the work of consultant design engineers. I also managed the Best Practices department which is responsible to implement best practices throughout the mine.Additionally, I covered the role of the Engineering Manager for 9 months while a permanent candidate was being recruited.

Rustenburg Area, South Africa

This role involved the implementation of best practices on Impala Mine. This included developing and updating Impala’s mining and engineering standards and procedures. Furthermore, a team of Mine Overseers reported to me who were engaged in improving mining efficiencies throughout the mine. The role also involved developing and implementing programmes in conjunction with the training department to train and develop mining personnel. I was also appointed as mine manager in terms of 3.1 of the Mine Health and Safety Act for Impala’s opencast operations managing the activities of the mining contractor.

Rustenburg Area, South Africa

During this period I was responsible to oversee the delivery of all the mining brownfield projects on Impala. This involved engaging with consulting design engineers and mine personnel to ensure that the design work, procurement and construction management was executed. The main work that was undertaken was construction of decline shaft systems at 11 Shaft and 14 Shaft with the entire related infrastructure. In addition, conceptual feasibility studies were undertaken for 9 Shaft and 12 Shaft decline shafts.

Marula Mine - Steelpoort, Limpopo

This role involved overseeing the design, procurement and construction management for the sinking of a decline shaft system. The project cost was in the order of R1.0 billion. The project included the mining of the excavations using trackless equipment, construction of a compressor station, raiseboring of two ventilation shafts, construction of main ventilation fan station, workshops, main store, conveyors and electrical reticulation.For two years during this period I was also responsible for the mining production of Marula mine and acted in the General Manager’s position on several occasions.Furthermore, I was responsible for the completion of a bankable feasibility study to exploit the Merensky reef at Marula.

No 12 Shaft - Rustenburg Area, South Africa

This job involved responsibility for the design and execution of the 12 Shaft project. This included all the mining using trackless equipment where I was appointed in terms of 2.6.1 of the Mine Health and Safety Act. This job also included responsibility for the design, procurement and construction management of the entire associated infrastructure. This included the sinking and equipping of a vertical shaft, sinking and equipping of two decline shafts, installation of a rock winder, installation of a refrigeration plant, construction of a main ventilation fan station, and the installation of the electrical reticulation.The last six months of this period was spent on 1 Shaft appointed as Mine Manager for mining production.

No 11 Shaft - Rustenburg Area, South Africa

I was appointed in terms of 2.13.1 of the Mine Health and Safety Act as the project engineer responsible for the 11 Shaft decline project. My role included compliance with all the engineer’s legal requirements, participation in the design team and to execute the project. My responsibilities included ensuring that the maintenance of the trackless fleet was done. Some of the main work included a headgear upgrade, surface silos, the construction of a rock winder, installation of pipes in the shaft, a monorail installation, conveyor belts, main ventilation fan station and the electrical reticulation.

I was appointed as the responsible engineer in terms of 2.13.3.1 of the Minerals Act. I carried out all the legal duties of the engineer and managed the engineering function on various shafts on Impala. These conventional vertical shafts are equipped with machinery such as winding plant, main ventilation fans, compressor station, refrigeration plant, main pump station, battery powered locomotives, electric winches and an electrical reticulation. All project work on these shafts during this period was executed under my direction. During my period at 14 Shaft, major project work was included in my portfolio as the shaft was still under construction.

I went through a formal training programme in preparation to write the examination to obtain an engineer’s certificate of competency in terms of the Minerals Act. This training included exposure to the main types of equipment found on a metalliferous mine; including compressors, refrigeration plants, conventional mining underground equipment, HT and LT electrical power supply, and mineral processing. In addition, I attended several engineering related courses and acted in responsible positions to increase my experience and practical knowledge.
