About Ken Fox
I am an expert in road traffic modelling at strategic, tactical and operational levels. I have more than 25 years of experience in the field having published many papers and have provided advice to the Highways Agency, the Department for Transport, the European Commission Transport Directorate and many local authorities throughout the UK.Since April 2011 I have been Managing Director of my own company called Fox Traffic Simulation which provides independent traffic modelling services to the public and private sectors. Previously for 10 years I was a Senior Consultant with the engineering company Halcrow where I was based in their Leeds office. Prior to taking up employment with Halcrow I was a Senior Research Fellow at the Institute for Transport Studies at the University of Leeds for almost nine years. At ITS I was project manager of a number of large European Commission funded collaborative projects and I had more than twenty papers published.I have made many presentations of my work at conferences, to clients and stakeholders, at Public Inquiries and traffic simulation software user group meetings. This has given me a unique perspective on the possibilities that traffic modelling has to offer clients in resolving their understanding of complex traffic problems.I have also given training courses in the use, calibration and validation of various traffic modelling packages and on the differences between the various packages – providing guidance on when one model should be used over another. I co-authored the Highway’s Agency advice note for the application of micro simulation models now included as part of DMRB guidelines. I also have considerable experience in auditing traffic models.Specialties: Road traffic simulation modelling, Aimsun, Paramics, VISSIM, SATURN, TRANSYT.
Listed skills include Road Traffic, Traffic Management, Modeling, Microsimulation, and 16 others.

Principal Traffic Modeller
Managing Consultant
Ceo
After almost 20 years experience in traffic modelling - firstly at the Institute for Transport Studies, University of Leeds and then at Halcrow, I decided to strike out on my own and provide independent traffic modelling services.
Senior Consultant
Have concentrated on studies using road traffic micro-simulation models. These include developing models of East Leeds to assess new bus priority strategies for the East Leeds Guided Bus System; the proposed Leeds Supertram network to estimate tram journey times; the A470 to evaluate a number of proposed options for improving the operation of this key trunk road; and Manchester City Centre to test the feasibility of increasing tram services. An expert in the use of micro-simulation models, such as Aimsun, Paramics & VISSIM. Have provided inputs to a study for the Highways Agency that reviewed the state-of-the-art of micro-simulation modelling as applied to motorways and trunk roads. This study was used as the basis for Interim Advice Note No. 36/01 on the use and application of micro-simulation traffic models. A further study has recently been carried out to allow the advice note to be updated and incorporated into the Design Manual for Roads and Bridges.Have also provided the Department for Transport with advice on the application of micro-simulation models in the UK. This concentrated on the applicability of certain in-built mechanisms (for example, car following and lane changing algorithms) of existing simulation models to UK conditions and the need for, and practicality of, research required to improve the applicability of existing simulation models to UK conditions.Have considerable experience in auditing micro-simulation models including many VISSIM and Paramics micro-simulation models for the Highways Agency.
Senior Research Fellow
Project manager, mainly of collaborative European Commission funded research and development projects. These included projects to develop and assess integrated traffic management strategies for urban arterial roads (PRIMAVERA); develop an artificial intelligence supervisor for a SCOOT UTC system; enhance road traffic micro-simulation models (SMARTEST).
Operations Analyst
Project leader, specialising in systems analysis and the development of large computer simulation models, mainly in the defence sector.
Postdoctoral Research Assistant
Developed many computer models to study the dynamics of planets, satellites, asteroids, comets and meteor streams. A key member of project LONGSTOP: an international collaboration to study the long-term stability of planetary and satellite systems. Produced the FORTRAN code used to solve the equations of motion of the outer planets using a Cray 1-S supercomputer. Adapted the program to solve the equations of motion of the Uranian satellite system. Studied the stability by looking at Lyaponov characteristic exponents. Studied the Kirkwood gaps in the asteroid belt using mapping techniques and the ICL Distributed Array Processor.
