After almost 20 years experience in traffic modelling - firstly at the Institute for Transport Studies, University of Leeds and then at Halcrow, I decided to strike out on my own and provide independent traffic modelling services.

Have concentrated on studies using road traffic micro-simulation models. These include developing models of East Leeds to assess new bus priority strategies for the East Leeds Guided Bus System; the proposed Leeds Supertram network to estimate tram journey times; the A470 to evaluate a number of proposed options for improving the operation of this key trunk road; and Manchester City Centre to test the feasibility of increasing tram services.An expert in the use of micro-simulation models, such as Aimsun, Paramics & VISSIM. Have provided inputs to a study for the Highways Agency that reviewed the state-of-the-art of micro-simulation modelling as applied to motorways and trunk roads. This study was used as the basis for Interim Advice Note No. 36/01 on the use and application of micro-simulation traffic models. A further study has recently been carried out to allow the advice note to be updated and incorporated into the Design Manual for Roads and Bridges.Have also provided the Department for Transport with advice on the application of micro-simulation models in the UK. This concentrated on the applicability of certain in-built mechanisms (for example, car following and lane changing algorithms) of existing simulation models to UK conditions and the need for, and practicality of, research required to improve the applicability of existing simulation models to UK conditions.Have considerable experience in auditing micro-simulation models including many VISSIM and Paramics micro-simulation models for the Highways Agency.

Project manager, mainly of collaborative European Commission funded research and development projects. These included projects to develop and assess integrated traffic management strategies for urban arterial roads (PRIMAVERA); develop an artificial intelligence supervisor for a SCOOT UTC system; enhance road traffic micro-simulation models (SMARTEST).

Project leader, specialising in systems analysis and the development of large computer simulation models, mainly in the defence sector.

Developed many computer models to study the dynamics of planets, satellites, asteroids, comets and meteor streams. A key member of project LONGSTOP: an international collaboration to study the long-term stability of planetary and satellite systems. Produced the FORTRAN code used to solve the equations of motion of the outer planets using a Cray 1-S supercomputer. Adapted the program to solve the equations of motion of the Uranian satellite system. Studied the stability by looking at Lyaponov characteristic exponents. Studied the Kirkwood gaps in the asteroid belt using mapping techniques and the ICL Distributed Array Processor.
