Internship with the Fraunhofer Centre for Applied Photonics to further the EngD research project whilst also gaining valuable work experience in a results driven environment. Multiple skills were developed further and utilised including:• Design of photonic devices for healthcare applications• Writing of funding applications• Zemax based optical design

Throughout my final year of university I worked in Frankie and Benny’s at the weekend serving food to customers and being a welcoming hostess. Due to working at peak times I was constantly working under pressure to ensure customers were given the level of service expected. Working as part of a large team also had its challenges including the need for good teamwork and excellent communication skills between floor staff and the kitchen.

A year’s industrial placement is required as part of my university degree. This involved me working full time and also completing a selection of university work in my spare time. This taught me to manage my time well.During the year I was based in the Blend Test Services Department, where I was responsible for a large number of chemical and physical tests, ran to an industry accredited standard. My main responsibility was to ensure that out of date products were not on the shelves being sold to customers. This involved checking the use by dates on refrigerated products and reducing items which were going out of date shortly by a given percentage; this requires me to be quick at mental arithmetic.
