As I wrapped up my career in the military, I was selected for leadership roles at one of the most challenging schools in the Marine Corps: Officers Candidate School.Operations Manager / Platoon CommanderAs the platoon commander, I supervised the operations of 4 instructors – seasoned non-commissioned officers – throughout the training evaluations of 48 to 58 candidates who aspired to serve as officers in the Corps.Officers Candidate School is rigorous, 66-day program designed to test the mettle of the candidates – with 2500 passing through the school each year on average – and I evaluated the physical, academic, and leadership performance of my platoon to provide senior leaders with recommendations on whether or not candidates should be selected for commissioning.Executive OfficerNext, I was selected as the executive officer and worked directly with the commander to plan and manage the daily activities of a training company.Using my project management skills, I coordinated the administrative and logistical requirements to plan, deliver, and manage training events that typically spanned the 16-hour days. I also evaluated the workflow of 4 platoons to ensure training consistency while also tracking the progress of 200 candidates.Testing & Evaluation ManagerFinally, I was tasked as the testing and evaluation manager to review, maintain, and update all of the tests and evaluations – including situational leadership – to ensure the validity and relevance to training standards. I also coached the organization’s 45 instructors in testing and evaluation methods, maintained test results, and provided analysis for senior leaders.I used project management methodologies to make a difference for the organization. For example, I streamlined the grading rubric from 5 to 3 evaluation categories and realigned them with updated graduation requirements. This reduced the workload by 33% while increasing the effectiveness of the candidate grading function.

I was selected as the assistant operations officer for the 7th Engineer Support Battalion – a general engineering unit that provides Marine Expeditionary Forces with civil engineering, mobility, counter-mobility and survivability, EOD, and general supply (bulk water and fuel) support.One of the largest units of its kind, I worked directly with the unit leadership to develop short- and long-range plans to prepare this 1,400-member organization with 7 subordinate units to perform assigned missions in combat environments.I also prepared resource recommendations and personnel assignments. coordinated with subordinate units, higher headquarters, and other organizations, and mentored junior officers in career development and job performance.Project Management Highlights:☑ To manage the planning, implementation, and evaluation of multiple training events, including weapons qualifications training, a 12-mile fitness hike, and combat skills training, I prepared, communicated, and enforced standard operating procedures.☑ I supervised and evaluated the performance of 16 small group-level tasks during the battalion’s annual field training exercise to determine the organization’s ability to complete its wartime mission.☑ I prepared and presented weekly status reports on individual and team performance effectiveness, as well as formal school training requirements.

After working with an engineering organization, I was selected for a leadership role in a sister unit – a logistics organization that provided supply, maintenance, material distribution, procurement, and equipment fielding support.With a focus on short- and long-range planning, I served as the assistant logistics officer for this unit with 400 personnel conducting combat training and real-word operations on land and on board naval ships, including operations with other US services and foreign partner nations.My duties included managing a $1.2 million inventory of durable and expendable items, preparing comprehensive status reports and presentations for mid-level managers and senior leaders, writing or updating standard operating procedures, and integrating regular performance coaching for the logistics team to ensure continuity during and between major organizational events and missions.Project Management Highlights☑ I was tasked as the lead planner to prepare my 10-member logistics department to deploy onboard 3 ships for 8 months; because my team would be dispersed on different vessels, it was important to verify that they had the skills to provide seamless logistics support.☑ With pre-deployment training a major focus for the organization, I developed plans to provide support in temporary camp environments and coordinated requirements for subsistence items, field latrines, and equipment issue; I also accounted for a mobile armory with 500 pieces of serialized equipment. ☑ While on board the USS PEARL HARBOR, I directed billeting and feeding of all 400 personnel; I also coordinated the phased off-loading of all personnel and equipment following this deployment.☑ Having been selected to participate in a military exchange program with the Indian military, I planned and presented a seminar on humanitarian support activities.

After completing Officer Candidate School and professional development training as an engineering officer, I was selected to manage the daily activities of a 16-member construction team. My work included administrative leadership, performance coaching, and maintaining an inventory worth $6.25 million.Project management highlights from my early career include:☑ Leading a 36-member team throughout planning for and execution of a high-visibility, 30-day bridge training exercise with 15 British Royal Army engineers; I also planned the movement of 10 vehicles over 350 miles, live-fire weapons qualifications events, and building 4 standards bridges – including the use of a helicopter during construction.☑ Directing 40 personnel to plan and construct a 2,900-foot civilian grade road for Joint Task Force North; for this project, I created Gantt charts to map the work flow, and coordinated all logistical support - including communication with contractors and higher headquarters – as well as delivery and inventory control of construction materials.☑ Planning, coordinating, and managing the execution of a 10-day bridging exercise with 42 Marine and Navy personnel that provided important cross-training for 2 organizations with different capabilities.☑ Establishing a comprehensive preventive maintenance schedule to prepare 18 vehicles for a 145-mile convoy, which was completed with no incidents or breakdowns.☑ Providing my team with growth leadership opportunities by designating 3 new supervisory roles.
