About Francesco Pagliano

Dr. Francesco Pagliano received his master degree in Particle Physics from the University of Turin (Italy) working on new quark particle states at the synchrotron accelerator of KEK in Tsukuba (Japan). He completed his PhD graduation in III-V semiconductor Quantum Photonics at the University of Technology of Eindhoven (The Netherlands). He conducted research in semiconductor physics and nano-photonics and has a long-expertise in micro- and nano-fabrication. He is currently co-founder of the nano-photonics pure-play foundry nanoPHAB and of the advanced spectral sensing company MantiSpectra. He is taking care of the main nano-photonics fabrication activities at nanoPHAB (www.nanophab.com) and of the micro-fabrication and optical engineering development within MantiSpectra (www.mantispectra.com).

    Near-Infrared (NIR) Spectroscopy is based on the absorption of molecules in the near-infrared part of the electromagnetic spectrum. The core principle of our detector solution is simple: light is emitted by a light source such as a tungsten lamp and its spectrum is selectively absorbed by the molecules of a target object resulting in a ‘fingerprint’ of the material. The spectrum of the light that interacts with the object is resolved in real-time by our own integrated multi-pixel spectrometer, a miniaturized, portable and cost-effective detector without the need of bulky, fragile and expensive setups.The detected spectrum is then process by our proprietary machine learning algorithm compared to a calibration set or a database so that the properties of the object can be quantified and/or the its material composition classified.A revolution in the market of real-time optical characterization

Moreover photonics is a major application market, growing very fast and with predicted multi-bilion market volume in the coming future.Nanotechnology is expected to bring breakthroughs in performance, power consumption and functionality, particularly in the fields of solar cells, lighting, sensing and optical interconnects. Many of these applications will require the combination of nanofabrication technologies with different materials like dielectrics (SiN,SiOx,Polymers), metals (Au,Ni,Ge,Ag,Ti,Pt,Cr,Zn,...) and semiconductors including Silicon and especially III-V compounds like InP and GaAs (potentially integrated with silicon), unique materials with specific properties for light generation and detection.However, the development of new nanophotonics technologies and market applications will heavily depend on the availability of low-entry barrier fabrication solutions. Many SMEs and international research institutions aiming at the development and production of nanophotonic components are missing the necessary resources and expertise and face huge investment costs for setting up own nanofabrication facilities, preventing them from accessing this market.
