At Geophy I'm part of the platform team. This team is responsible for developing and maintaining the data management platform. This platform is where our data gets ingested, transformed, validated and enriched. At MyParcel I was asked to re-architect our legacy shipping platform to meet the current usage and performance demands. After one year and a half we successfully finished the development and deployment of our new platform. Brief highlight of my activities.* Since the legacy system did not have any kind of documentation I had to setup an internal knowledge base.* Created Use case UML diagrams for the shipping platform.* Wrote a roadmap for the new platform based on the usage and performance needs.* Chose the right technologies and design patterns that will allow us to scale horizontally.* Created data model and module UML diagrams to be used during development.* Wrote the new API specifications.* Setup a team to develop the different parts of the system.* Initiated the scrum development process.Brief highlight of the new platform.* The entire platform is an API allowing external systems to be easily integrated with the shipping platform.* Searching is vital for our customers. This used to be very slow and restricted. Now we have a google-like search that returns results within milliseconds.* All endpoints can process batch of objects. This effectively increases the throughput of the system.* The legacy system used HMAC for API requests which was difficult and error prone. This has been replaced with a simpler method that uses HTTP/S and API key in the Authorization header.* The front-end is now a full javascript application which makes it a lot faster and easier to maintain.* Billing took 3 days to complete on the legacy system. At Organic software I'm currently involved in the development of the HTML5 Magazine Platform (http://www.h5mag.nl/) which is a new and exciting product to build online magazines that are highly interactive, responsive, cross-platform and cross-device. Clients such as Vodafone, Morrisons, Bikbok and Kwatum are currently using the HTML5 Magazine to promote their products and services. I also created a screenshot server for the HTML5 Magazine based on QtWebkit C++ library which is used for automatic screenshot generation of HTML5 Magazine pages.Besides HTML5 Magazine I also did some major refactoring of the entire Choices Programme backend system (www.choicesprogramme.org) also known as 'Ik kies bewust' in the Netherlands. A legacy component has been replaced with Zend framework and Rococo 2 Javascript library. I also implemented an API for integration with third parties such as Foodscore. At Leaseweb I used my skills to co-architect and implement a testing environment that a) closely resembles our production environment and b) is easy for developers and testers to use. Net result of this was a measurable improvement in the software quality that is built and deployed. Developers and system administrators are able to detect major bugs and prototype new solutions before they go live. Because the system is easy and simple testers are able to perform more and better test cases. Besides this I also re-factored our ticketing system, based on RT, which was growing out of control. Because of the database size that was more than 150GB and the amount of transactions per day we had to use expensive hardware to keep up with this. I re-factored RT to store ticket attachments on-disk instead of in-database.
