Completing the circle. After a sound career in finance, and then following the steps of most Fortune 500 CEOs development programme, I invested years in the boardroom of listed entities followed by a ten year track record in the top job CEO position of a leading large corporation in logistics. My focus was increasing valuation by building on people, strategy, financial engineering, technology and governance. Doubled turnover. Doubled FTEs. Increased valuation by 40%. Maintained dividend even through the Great Lockdown. Kept all stakeholders in market equilibrium. Heightened brand equity. Negligible staff attrition even during the Great Resignation era. Put logistics on the public agenda. Kept the company in the top corporate league charts. As a Freelance CEO, I am making available my acquired technical competence and experience to corporations on contract basis. Objectives typically include management restructuring and training towards a high degree of preparedness for a full time dedicated CEO, and towards better practice governance and value creation and preservation.

Taking delegated responsibility on behalf of the board of directors for ensuring that there is a framework for accountability; for examining and reviewing all systems and methods of control both financial and otherwise including risk analysis and risk management; and for ensuring the bank is complying with all aspects of the law, relevant regulations and good practice.

Joining a successful family business that is in its third generation and which has grown to become the market leader locally, is a challenge indeed. My multi-bottom line typically points towards strong governance, meritocracy and equilibrium among all stakeholders, and capacity building in people and digitalisation. Steered the company through the Great Lock-down, Brexit, a major surgery in business processes, and economic stagflation, while 'Leaving no one behind'. No salaries, dividends, or payments were in any way negatively impacted, when road-transport operators faced a wave of bankruptcies. Default risks increased globally. Preserved a pristine bank finance rating. I took bold decisions even if no playbook was around. No history or MBA readings were available to draw on. I kept my people motivated and determined to serve. My main objective was and remained 'Future-readiness and durability of the Group'. InstituteOfKarate.com is the evolved name of the institution I founded in 1987 under the name of Muteki Karate Studio. Muteki was the name chosen by Sensei Shirai Hiroshi after my dan grading, in which I achieved the highest marks in the exam held in Italy. Muteki, he had explained, means, 'No enemy'. He explained further that with the attitude of karate, no enemy, and a thousand enemies are the same. This is possible through the confidence one builds in oneself and the tolerance towards others. MaltaDOJO.com today attempts to disseminate the effectiveness of the karate that was used for hundreds of years in Okinawa for just self protection. Sport karate has evolved for the modern world. Inevitably, many techniques that are effective in real-life situations had to be removed or modified for safety in competition. InstituteOfKarate.com is not promoting sport karate, but Dento-Karate, or original karate.

I joined the board with the objective of sharing my experience and knowledge in strategy, finance, risk and governance, towards adding value at one of the leaders in the insurance business in Malta. Technical competence is a must in the Insurance sector, which in itself is extremely complex and regulated. The academy in governance and risk in the industry is next to that in Banking, also a very highly regulated sector. My experience in banking gave me a solid foundation to build on in my formation. Interestingly, the optic and dimension of risk identification and management within the three lines framework model of defense applied with the highest vigour in the company, added a lot of sense, reason and value to my interest in entrepreneurship and business studies, of which I consider myself a lifelong student. A great team of professionals to work with. One of the best experiences.

The Malta Institute of Accountants is the only accountancy oganisation in Malta recognised by the Accountancy Profession Act and by the Accountancy Board within the Mininstry of Finance.Elected President of the Institute after the AGM 2015 held on Thursday 16th July 2015. The term of office ran till the AGM of 2017. Recognised by Institute in Hall of Past Presidents with the prestigious Milestone: “Worked hard to promote ethics and integrity during a period where the local profession was going through a challenging time.”

Have been athlete and coach of the national team of Traditional Karate. My personal best in European Championships was 4th and in the World Championships, 6th place. Coached athletes to various degrees of achievements and in various age categories. Most prestigious results were gold, silver and bronze medals in the European championships in 2001 and 2005.

Was elected first president of this federation and managed to secure full membership with the European Traditional Karate Federation and the global International Traditional Karate Federation.

Joined as an articled clerk, qualified as an accountant there and worked myself up to Senior Manager both in the Malta office as well as in Italy. Left the firm on the merger with the then Touche Ross to set up partnership as an SMP. My main role with DH&S was in auditing. I was in charge of the audits of Corinthia Group and Middle Sea Insurance in Malta, General Motors Italia, RIV-SKF, FIAT-ALLIS in Italy, among others, reporting directly to the responsible partners.
