About Frank Cain

Although I am currently registered as an Emergency Medical Technician as well as trained in hemodialysis, I find my most passion in working with my tribes traditional agriculture, culture, politics, and history. My position within my community has pushed me to establish the Skaroreh Katenuaka Seed Bank, as well as the Alliance of Native Seedkeepers. These programs have allowed us to combat both cultural and food insecurity as well as educate on community health. If you know anything about Skarure/Haudenosaunee culture, you would know that our agriculture is vital to our existence and heritage and therefore has also allowed me to wear a number of hats as an outdoors-person, educator, advocate, historian, environmentalist, and much more.

  • Skaroreh Katenuaka Seedbank
    Founder
Skaroreh Katenuaka Seedbank Mar 2012 - Present
"Today we are faced with a number of threats to our very existence, illnesses such as diabetes and cancer, hunger and undernourishment, food deserts and poor education as well as cultural insecurity, all of which pushes us closer to a cultural extinction. For us, it just made sense to return to the root of our identity and revive our communities from there. The problem was, even our land and agriculture was endangered.Goals• Rebuild and maintain our food diversity and their stories; uses and traditions.• Encourage healthier, traditional diets by making supply and knowledge more accessible• Reduce the impact of food deserts and food insecurity.• Rebuild our soil and educate our communities on traditional perma-culture practices.• Utilize our agriculture to help further revive and protect the many other aspects of our culture, such as language and arts.• Preserve our natural environmental resources and educate on their importance.• Take our knowledge and resources and gift it to our many other struggling communities so they too can enjoy the security of their natural resources for generations to come.• Develop a seed exchange focused on our indigenous communities.• Initiate a traditional breeding program to cultivate crops better adapted for our changing climate to assist in maintaining food security for generations to come.• Offer banking services for the various tribal communities and nations which currently lack the resources to protect the seed themselves. • Assist in developing seed libraries among the various indigenous nations.• Offer programs the bring sources of income to local community members, as well as other relatives and friends across Turtle Island."As the founding member of the organization, I've had to wear all the hats within the program to see to its success, which included self financing, fundraising, grant allocation, land acquisition for farming, seed acquisition and saving, field labor, education, and much more.
