I studied molecular biology at the University of Sheffield. The course branched into several modules under one of four subject titles; molecular biology, genetics, microbiology and biochemistry, as well as giving the opportunities to study other subjects outside of the department, such as pathology and evolutionary biology. I am most interested in genetics, particularly human genetic diseases, however I am open to studying in other relevant fields to my degree. I had four years of lab training, as well as, two years working on larger research projects, lasting six and ten months respectively. Providing me experience with participating as a member of a group project but also leading my own project.I feel my training allows me to combine numerous fields to tackle complicated research topics. Outside of the taught content, the most important abilities I developed were critical thinking and analytical skills. These skills are ubiquitously applicable to all areas of research, studying and learning. Furthermore, I also have a strong background in maths and statistics, in addition to training in computational methods. I’m also a quick learner and relish the challenge of studying new subjects and topics. I graduated with a 2:1 MBiolSci Molecular Biology Masters degree.Outside of University and academic work, I have worked as a lifeguard and swimming teacher since I was 16. These jobs require good team work skills, a good work ethic, responsibility and staying calm in stressful situations. These skills are transferable to many fields of work.
