I was the number one anchor at KTVU for thirty years. I have watched two executions. I’ve flown with the blue angels. I have seen an autopsy. And I was the first anchor ever invited to take part in Urban Shield. Which was a police swat competition for 48 hours with no sleep. I did all of those things because an anchor is only as good as his experiences.Sadly I also suffered from addiction and mental health issues because I cared too much about the stories I covered. I went to 8 funerals for young black men and women because I wanted to tell their stories on Facebook where I have 575,000 followers. I didn’t want them to just be a number. I wanted to tell their stories.They were all open casket.I’ll be the first to admit that that broke me. I felt like my mind was cracking. But I was scared to ask for help because main anchors don’t do that. So I drank instead. I’ve been clean since 6/6/23. My goal now is to tell people that it’s okay to ask for help.And to let people know what addiction and mental health issues are really about. At the same time I’d love to anchor again. I was fired at KTVU because I questioned our incessant coverage of Gabby Petito.We all know that her story went national because she was a cute white kid. My daughter is adopted and black. She would never get the same coverage. That really disappointed me. But instead of having a discussion. KTVU fired me and questioned my news judgement. I have great news judgement and would love to work at a station where I could share my experience with reporters and anchors who are on their way up. So that’s my story.
