I am a deep Compensation and Total Rewards expert, building and leading the Google Compensation team. I also consulted with Hewitt Associates, where I was a partner and Compensation subject matter expert, working on Executive, Broad-based, and Sales Compensation design. At Google, I manage an annual compensation spend of more than $50 Billion, with an annual Compensation cycle budget of approximately $20 Billion. I’ve helped the organization adapt its Compensation and Total Rewards programs as it grew from $15 Billion to over $300 Billion annual revenue; from 12,000 to 185,000 employees; and from approximately 20 to over 60 countries. I’ve taken the Compensation Team to nearly 60 staffers from a total of 7 when I joined the Company in 2007. As the Company and its talent needs evolved, I‘ve helped Google earn its reputation for innovative Compensation designs. The team is recognized for its leading edge efforts both inside the Company, and externally.For efficiency, I’ve taken our Compensation cycle from quarterly to semi-annual efforts, and then to a single annual event; for employee experience, from annual to monthly equity vests, and replacing stock option grants with restricted stock units; for effectiveness, from a philosophy based on each element of Compensation, to one which is focused on total compensation, changing the long-term compensation cost trajectory with an impact in the billions of dollars. These are just a few examples of the impact the team and I have had, basing our decisions on first principles, attraction and retention data, employee surveys (including conjoint studies), and analysis of factors affecting employee engagement and satisfaction. I regularly answer questions at Google town halls, and hold Company-wide video conferences on compensation - with audiences in the tens of thousands. I’m highly respected at all levels of the Company and an effective communicator who is well-known - and well regarded - across the Company.I’ve been successful because I understand the business, have strong pattern recognition, can connect with our technical and business leaders, and have a principled approach to Total Rewards problem solving.
