My thesis research is focusing on rural private drinking water well quality on a First Nation in Alberta focusing on identifying correlations between historical and environmental factors with bacteriological contamination in order to identify sources and vectors of well water contamination. We also conducted community interviews to understand the impacts of poor water quality on other aspects of life and worked with band leadership to explore ways to move forward to address the water challenges faced by the nation.As part of my studies I've completed courses including: community-based research, environmental risk, health care systems change, water treatment, and systems dynamics modeling. I've had the opportunity to TA several courses including: technical writing, numerical processes, and introduction to environmental engineering.

Malawi

Engineers Without Borders' Junior Fellowship program recruits university students from across Canada to support EWB's overseas programs working to reduce poverty and promote human development. I worked with the water and sanitation team in Malawi to conduct a research program which sought to better understand the challenges that rural communities face in repairing their water wells when they experience breakdowns. Our analysis looked at various factors including social, cultural, and economic constraints, transportation issues, supply chain management and others. Specific tasks included:- Performed a community-based interviews in rural areas with local village water committees- Developing a workshop with local NGO and government staff to share best practices- Compiling research findings and publishing them at an international water conference

Red Deer, Alberta

During my final co-op work term, I worked in the Environmental department of the Stantec Red Deer office. I was involved in the design and construction process of various municipal infrastructure projects including water treatment plants, reservoirs, pump stations, and pipelines. Specific responsibilities included:- Facilitating the coordination of various departments during the design process- Compiling contract documents and ensuring accuracy and consistency- Supporting contract administration, project tendering and construction progress monitoring

Grande Prairie, Alberta

Based out of the Grande Prairie office, I spent my second co-op work term with Nichols Environmental (Canada) performing a wide range of environmental assessment, monitoring, and remediation activities. I had the opportunity to work on several contaminant clean ups throughout the entire process from first call to completed clean up. Other projects and responsibilities I undertook included:- Independently operating a water treatment unit for treating hydrocarbon contaminated water- Directing contractors in the clean up of hydrocarbon contaminated soil excavations- Routinely monitoring groundwater quality for a snow storage facility- Independently surveying a constructed water reservoir- Performing follow up testing on a herbicide spill clean up- Supporting phase I and II environmental site assessments

Kluane Lake, Yk

During my first co-op work term, I spent eight months working for the Yukon government on an isolated stretch of the Alaska highway supervising the reconstruction of the highway. The project involved significant blasting, lake infilling, fish habitat construction, and a bridge replacement, all adjacent to Kluane National Park resulting in additional environmental considerations. I performed daily inspections of the site in addition to undertaking several other responsibilities including:- Performing density testing of soil compaction- Contractor correspondence and direction- Environmental practices such as wetland construction, fish inventories, and site inspections- Assisting site surveying of as-built road tops and gravel pits
