About Fred Chumo
Growing up, leadership came naturally. I am the 1st born of 7 children & was appointed to leadership positions from primary school, where I was the Head Boy to University, where I was a student leader from 1st to 4th year. After qualifying as a lawyer, I was employed & was appointed to leadership within one year of entry. I have since served in various leadership positions in many corporate organizations in Kenya & abroad. While growing up, I observed many challenges around me: a poor healthcare system, a broken justice system, a dilapidated education system, & an adverse business environment, among others. I saw the negative effects of these challenges on my compatriots including high rates of infant mortality, school dropouts, unemployment, & unresolved disputes in the judicial system, among others. Many of these are caused by bad governance & poor leadership, but I did not know how to resolve them at the time. The turning pointWhile studying & working, I was exposed to different leadership styles. I also had the opportunity to live & travel abroad & observed good leadership. Some organizations & countries with few resources were doing much better than many with greater resources. I was reminded of a quote by John C. Maxwell "Everything rises & falls on Leadership".I am convinced there are three components in leadership namely, (1) Vision, (2) Heart, & (3) Systems. A good leader must have a great vision that is beyond self, a heart for his constituents & implement the right systems to succeed. If the quality of leadership improves in any organization or society, the quality of performance or life increases significantly.PresentlyOver the years, I tested many leadership concepts & saw what works. I also developed capacity through training & studying leadership, strategy, management, economics, trade, finance, law, & governance.I continue to serve as a business leader in a thriving financial institution & on the boards of organizations as a governance, strategy & legal advisor. FutureThe challenges around us are surmountable & good leadership holds the key. I will continue to offer stewardship in the organizations where I serve & endeavour to do the following:· Provide thought leadership in key areas.· Educate & enrich discussion & debate around contemporary & emerging issues.· Mentor & equip leaders & policymakers.· Influence policy action. Are you a business or national leader or policymaker requiring support or insights on leadership? Please reach out to me via inbox & follow me on any of my social pages for more engagements.
