I am a self-directed critical thinker with twenty-plus years of experience in education and communications who has proven abilities to research complex topics, write for general and specialized audiences, speak effectively in public settings, and lead team initiatives.Nine years of reporting for daily newspapers, mostly with the Daily Press in Newport News, Virginia, taught me to write knowingly on unforgiving deadlines about topics familiar and unfamiliar. I mostly examined the people and issues of local government, writing about spending debates, boardroom politicking, land development deals and such. I also covered public schools, crime and the environment. This work familiarized me with translating the technical language of budgets, strategic plans and legislative bills into easy-to-read articles. I explained to citizens why government decisions mattered to them with clarity, simplicity and accuracy.I transitioned into academia as increasingly frequent employee buyouts suggested a troubling future for newspapers. I studied American studies and U.S. history at the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia, where I earned my doctorate in 2012. As an instructor, I’ve taught courses in U.S., World, and African American history. Working with students at a large suburban university, two historically black universities, an urban Catholic university, and a community college system motivated me to redesign my course activities and assessments to better suit the learning needs of today's diverse student populations. As a historical researcher, I’ve explored archival collections, scoured the internet and social media networks and questioned experts to write conference papers, book reviews, journal articles, and blog posts. My book, Race News: Black Journalists and the Fight for Racial Justice in the Twentieth Century, examined the political and professional evolution of black journalism. It was named the best journalism history book and also a finalist for best overall mass communication book by the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication in 2018.I currently hold a non-tenure-track teaching position at Kennesaw State University outside of Atlanta. I also serve as the history department’s Coordinator of Part-Time U.S. History Faculty, which means I conduct classroom observations, review syllabi and generally assist twelve instructors.While I enjoy my work, I am open to new professional challenges.
