Strategic and PoC level evaluation of emerging technologies as innovation enablers and customer differentiators for Z Workstations and embedded compute edge products.

ACS Technical Patent Coordinator -Fred leads the ACS Patent Review Committee. He gives IP guidance to less experienced patent committee participants, holds periodic patent scrubs prior to a product launch, and tracks intellectual property (IP) delivery metrics for ACS management. In this role Fred leads in educating the ACS team, and HP overall, in the mechanics, strategic value, and strategic considerations around IP.ACS Structured Innovation Lead -Fred has led with the strategic creation and hosting of weekly structured innovation sessions within ACS since 2019. Fred was tasked by ACS management to develop these Friday morning (two-hour) innovation sessions. The invite list for these sessions has grown to over 300 individuals and has an average attendance of 40 to 50 with a peak attendance recently of 125. Under Fred’s leadership or due to his direct efforts, sessions to inform, inspire and engender innovation within ACS have been created and regularly held, such as:• Innovation Friday – Open forum for ACS employees to champion their ideas• PoC Friday – Forum for sharing of progress on proof-of-concept ideas by teams• IP and Patent Friday – Discussion and learning about intellectual property and patents• Patent Disclosure Friday – Created recently to provide exposure to the wider ACS of recently filed patent disclosures and what is involved.• Innovation Insights Friday – Marketing and product planning; share customer insights with wider ACS team.• Innovation Insights and Trends Friday – various market segment leaders discuss their customers needs.• Insight and Ideate Large Group Innovation Sessions Beyond ACS in the US, Fred has worked with the ACS R&D team in Taipei to launch Innovation Thursdays with that team. Fred has been core both strategically and on an execution basis to creating a dynamic calendar of weekly ACS structured innovation sessions.

Fred has been and is the technical and engineering lead for multiple emerging technology product initiatives within HP ACS. Fred’s broad and deep technology and engineering capabilities along with his proven innovation acumen are demonstrated in this role. When ACS has an emerging technology based product concept to be developed and proven out, Fred is asked to fill this role by ACS management. Leopard Electro-Optical (EO) Digital Pen Program (2015-2016) – Joint venture with Swedish digital pen company Anoto.Fred was the HP technical lead and architect for this program. A HP R&D team of six was engaged full-time on this program with Fred providing technical leadership. Anoto provided the EO pen technology. What was missing was a method to render the Anoto encoding dot pattern to a display such that the pen could see it while, to a human viewing the display, it was invisible. Fred developed/invented this display film technology. Fred’s invention provided for a low-cost flexographically-printed HP display film. Anoto’s digital EO pen technology beyond paper to displays was enabled. Several of Fred’s inventions in this field have issued. Fred was a senior touch technologist for the premium Notebook Group. During this period Fred worked with supplier Synaptics to develop the FocrePad for HP laptops. Fred wrote the HP specification for the ForcePad® and saw it through successful introduction in HP NB computers. Fred was integral to the co-development of that technology with Synaptics and was the source for introducing the use of Fujifilm metal mesh as the high S/N projective capacitive sensor layer for ForcePad®. This not only improved performance, but also allowed Fred reduced costs for the ForcePad over its HP lifecycle by ~$12 million. In that role Fred also led the PS Touch Technology Forum, which included HCI (Human Computer Interface) teams from both CMIT and Consumer division of PS. Fred led in the exploration of new technology alternatives for touch and pen for HP Personal Systems. Fred additionally was the lead author on an accepted TechCon paper addressing “HP Universal Digital Pen.”

Fred was asked to provide leadership and responsibility for engaging small groups of HP Desktop innovation teams to deliver innovative differentiation centric to near-term (< 2 years) future HP Desktop computer products. He was also responsible for effective and timely communication of these innovation efforts back to the DTO management chain. He provided this communication via several mechanisms (SharePoint, TechCon papers and R&D Blog posts), very effectively, and had strong feedback in that regard from both management and colleagues.Fred led innovation development for approximately a dozen different concepts in this role. Numerous patent disclosures/patents and internal technical papers were written with Fred, again showing his leadership by consistently being the lead author of these. HP Principal Hardware Architect for these MediaSmart Home Server products.Fred moved on to heading up the architecture/design and management of the system, mechanical, thermal and industrial design for the HP MediaSmart Home Server product line at that point. He filled that role as a Principal Hardware Architect in the Storage and Entertainment Products Group (STEP) for 5+ years. He also was the group’s Patent & Innovation Coordinator for that period. In his role as Principal Hardware Architect, Fred delivered numerous important technical and innovation contributions to STEP, as well as over seven industry-first home server products for HP (EX470, EX475, EX485, EX487, LX195 EX490 & EX495). For example, during 2007-2008, he had seven US patents issued with him as a named HP inventor. Fred was Iomega Corporation’s Chief Technologist in Advanced R&D where he achieved this standing and role at an industry leading and multi-billion-dollar revenue data storage company through both his innovation delivery capabilities but also through his leadership effectiveness.Fred was Iomega Corporation’s technical program lead and architect for multiple programs. These included: Floptical Data Storage Drive, Near-field Optical Data Storage Initiative, Holographic Data Storage Initiative, Clik! Drive, Rev Secure Drive – Security Design, ZIP Drive Data Storage Cartridge, among others. Fred remains as Iomega’s all-time leading inventor. Dell-EMC acquired Iomega in 2008.A chronology of some of Fred's contributions:• 1995-2005 - One of the inventors of the ZIP drive. This invention drove Iomega Corporation’s revenues from $100 million/yr. to $2 billion/yr. (20x) over a two-year period. • 2002-2010 – Inventor of a new form of optical data storage: “Subwavelength Optical Data Storage.” Please Google the topic to find out more about this invention of Fred's.• 1998-2002 - Inventor of the Clik! Drive (micro-cartridge flexible magnetic media data storage). Evidence: see US patent #s 6,587,304 - 6,785,091.• 2003-2010 - Holder of the most basic patent in removal hard platter magnetic cartridge data storage. “Removable cartridge recording device incorporating antiferromagnetically coupled rigid magnetic media.” • 2002-2010 - Inventor of the magnetic head cleaning mechanism for the Iomega REV drive. • 1991-1994 – Designer and inventor of laser servo-writer for Floptical media. Design received the prestigious Laser Focus World Magazine “Electro-Optic Application of the Year Award" in 1994.o 1995 – Discovery that flexible data recording media’s rotational standing-waves have non-linear frequency snapping at high RPM when magnetic recording heads are radially transitioned. • 1995-2004 - Inventor of multiple auto-ID technologies for data storage cartridges.

ProtoType Devices - Build custom instruments and productivity devices under contract. Camera test systems, machine vision systems and gas loggers.

Fred spent five years with Texas Instrument Defense Systems (now part of Raytheon) working as an electro-optical systems engineer. He designed and modelled, via software he coded, TV imaging systems, infrared thermal imaging systems, and laser rangefinder and designator systems. In one of his roles while at TI, Fred was promoted to the lead laser designator technologist/engineer with responsibility for both modeling and testing laser designator systems to be used with precision guided missiles and bombs such as the TI Paveway ordinance system. Fred did the simulations and testing to re-direct TI’s choice of laser type for air-defense laser range-finding and designation applications. Fred worked principally on ship based electro-optic fire control systems such as Seafire for the US Navy and Sea Dragon for the Korean Navy.

Student intern at the highly selective NIST. Worked on creating data logging systems for heat pumps to record their performance and publish results. Offered full-time job at NIST upon graduation.
