Product Manager

Chapel Hill, Nc, Us

Senior Human Factors Engineer

Ara

Albuquerque, Nm, Us

Program Manager for a multi-year R&D effort focused on Human-Machine Interaction / Human-Machine Teaming. This program explores the Human Factors and Cognitive Psychology considerations for one-to-many management of autonomous ground (UGV) and aerial (UAS) robots by a single human operator. Human subject tests within a high fidelity immersive VR simulation will quantify the outcomes in 2024. 2025 and beyond will include live tests with humans managing real UAS/UGV assets concurrently with simulated agents included in the study (i.e., a Live Virtual Constructive (LVC) experience).

Product Manager - Augmented Reality

Human-Machine Interaction Research Engineer / Scientist

East Hartford, Ct, Us

The HMI team focused on rapid generation and evaluation of software challenges at the forefront of technology – areas with few established usability guidelines and no turnkey solution. The team had a strong focus in VR and AR, but frequently partners with other disciplines such as machine learning, data analytics, computer vision, and autonomy. My responsibilities included: - Guide UX research and design (including IxD, IA, and look-and-feel) in team software prototyping efforts in VR and other MR-spectrum technologies.- Generate solution requirements through a user-centered design approach, including user + stakeholder interviews, contextual analysis, and literature review. Outputting wireframes, user journeys, requirements documentation, and style guides.- Identification and research of human factors requirements for VR+MR, mobile / touchscreen dashboards, autonomous / optionally piloted vehicles, and other industrial touch-points.- Software development for prototype applications – programming primarily in C# and Python.- Generate project funding through internal and external sources.- Software concept evaluation / human subject testing.

Sep 2015 - Feb 2018

Human-Computer Interaction And Mechanical Engineering Graduate Researcher

Ames, Iowa, Us

I worked as a full time researcher at Iowa State University's Virtual Reality Applications Center, primarily on usability and UX of virtual reality visualization and interaction devices. The VRAC has access to cutting edge VR facilities - including a 6-wall CAVE powered by 24 4K projectors and a 48 node dual-CPU/GPU rendering cluster. My main focus from June of 2013 to December of 2014 was the implementation and usability testing of augmented reality (AR) work instructions for industrial assembly tasks. Following a user-centered approach, we built our own AR software and conducted user testing to find the best visual features and application layout, iterating through several solutions.Aside from my work with AR, I have worked to determine the best practices for selecting and integrating new consumer-level VR devices with engineering software. In early 2014 I authored a document outlining VR technology that discusses the cognitive principles of VR, key technical requirements for successful deployment, and reviews and recommendations for contemporary devices in 2014. Additionally, I have demonstrated the integration of commodity VR interaction devices with engineering software in my thesis, where I integrated a LEAP Motion Controller with our own CAD-style design tool. This deployment was tested with a cognitive modeling approach (NGOMSL) and proven to be more effective than traditional mouse and keyboard interaction. In the past, I assisted with the development of a collaborative mechanical design suite named Advanced Systems Design Suite (ASDS) and used it to design a large mechanical assembly for an industry partner. I've also assisted with day-to-day activities at VRAC's User Experience (UX) Lab and have helped run a number of user studies.

Aug 2012 - Dec 2014

Staff Engineer

Nexus Engineering

From January 2011 through August 2012, I served as the interim fire protection program manager at Brunswick Nuclear Power Plant. Duties for this position included informing temporary and permanent plant modifications to maintain NFPA code compliance and to ensure the plant remained insured by Nuclear Electric Insurance Limited (NEIL). Previous to that, I assisted the NFPA 805 transfer at Brunswick Nuclear Power Plant. In addition to my work at Brunswick, I analyzed multiple spurious operations (MSO's) at Peach Bottom Atomic Power Station and participated in a fire alarm upgrade feasibility study at Palo Verde Nuclear Generating Station.

Jan 2010 - Aug 2012

Research Assistant

Ames, Iowa, Us

As an undergraduate research assistant, I contributed to the mechanical and software development of a humanoid robot that learns behavior through interacting with its environment and using the result of the interaction to update machine learning models. I apologize in advance if this effort leads to SkyNet and/or Terminators.

Sep 2008 - Dec 2009

Research Assistant

Ames, Iowa, Us

As an undergraduate research assistant, I helped develop a ceiling-mounted active noise control system that utilized piezoelectric actuators. Duties included the design and fabrication of acoustic test apparatuses, MATLAB development, and testing/data analysis.

Feb 2008 - Jan 2009

Research Assistant

Ames, Iowa, Us

As an undergraduate research assistant, I conducted underwater resonance testing on nuclear fuel rods. Relevant tasks include: test apparatus setup, data collection and interpretation, and MATLAB development for analysis tools.

Sep 2007 - Jan 2008

Mechanical Engineering Intern

Stockholm, Se

This summer internship had me working within the Primary Development (R&D) engineering team on a new recirculation pump system for next generation Electrolux brand upright washing machines.

May 2008 - Aug 2008

Mechanical Engineering Intern

Joule Technologies

This recurring summer internship took place over several summers - 2006, 2007, 2009 - as well as various other breaks in my school schedule. As an intern, I started with the fabrication of in-circuit test fixtures, using hand tools as well as lathes, mills, CNC routers, and other things that could potentially cut my hands off. Towards the end, with both hands intact, I was able to design and implement a ladder-logic controlled system to test a prototype mechanical assembly through failure analysis. I also developed and executed a test plan which outlined a procedure to collect and interpret data.
