Frederick C. Schaefer (Fred) is currently Associate Vice President & Legal Counsel for Nationwide Indemnity. For the past 28 years Fred has handled and eventually directed the efforts of various insurance/reinsurance companies to run-off their legacy liabilities relating to asbestos/toxic tort and environmental risks. Previously he worked for private law firms handling mass tort insurance and reinsurance issues. Currently Fred is tasked with leading legal team supporting Nationwide Group’s Asbestos, Environmental, Long Term Exposure, Toxic Tort, Sexual Abuse and Health Hazard liabilities.As a recognized expert, Fred is asked to frequently speak on Asbestos, Environmental and other Toxic Tort Exposures. Further Fred has worked with various state legislatures considering tort reform legislation. Fred graduated with a double major (B.A. Political Science/Economics) from Hobart College in Geneva New York and received his Juris Doctor from the John Marshall Law School in Chicago, Illinois. He has presented on the issue of run-off liabilities within the insurance/reinsurance arena. Fred is actively involved in litigation, arbitrations and mediations relating to insurance and reinsurance issues. He has served as a member of the Board of Directors of ROM Reinsurance Management Services. Currently Fred is a member of the International Association of Defense Counsel (Insurance Vice Chair of Civil Justice Response Committee), the Wisconsin Bar Association, the Marathon County Bar Association, and American Bar Association and is admitted to the Bars of the State of Wisconsin, State of Illinois and the Federal District of Northeast Illinois.In his community, Fred is an elected member of the Town of Rib Mountain Board of Supervisors, President of the Marathon County Development Corporation, Member of the Board of the South Area Fire District, Member of the Towns Association Advisory Council and a past member of the Board of Directors for the Wausau Conservatory of Music. Fred is married to Michelle and has two grown children, Alyssa and Nathan. They reside in Rib Mountain, Wisconsin.
