I've always been creative. My formal art education started early with private lessons at twelve-years. In 1997 I earned a BFA in Illustration from the Rhode Island School of Design and 10-years later earned an MFA in Painting from the University of the Arts in Philadelphia. In 2016 I founded the MJFdesign Gallery in Belgium.Zen and balance are important to my process. Most paintings begin with a monotone drawing that I bring to balance. Color is worked in the same way. One painting may be built up with as many as thirty color layers, some more but usually not less. The end result is a chaotic, yet balanced torrent of swirling color.I enjoy experimenting with all aspects of how my work is constructed. I use Arches heavy watercolor paper. I sometimes mount the paper on wood to maintain a flat surface. I also make my own acrylic-based paint which has unique qualities but is similar to gouache and aquarell. The matte, super-vivid color of my paintings gives them a singular appearance.My artwork is a response to the natural world and inspired by history. I am most satisfied with my work when it makes a connection to art history, especially ancient history. Love2 Publishing is the distributor and publisher for MJFdesign. Love2 at love2publish.org was originated to facilitate the publication of a limited edition printing of Love Squared, Matthew J. Frock's first illustrated book. Love Squared is a work in progress for Love2 Publishing. MJFdesign continues to publish its narrative content through Love2 Publishing.
