The Virginia Heart Attack Coalition (VHAC) is a collaborative partnership among the Virginia Chapter of the American College of Cardiology, American Heart Association, the Virginia Office of Emergency Medical Services, the Virginia Hospital and Healthcare Association, the Virginia College of Emergency Physicians, the Virginia Department of Health Heart Disease and Stroke Prevention Project, and many other partners across the state. Working to improve systems of care for the early recognition and treatment of all Virginia residents having heart attacks, the Virginia Heart Attack Coalition is helping to implement the American Heart Association’s community-based national initiative Mission: Lifeline, designed to improve the health care system’s readiness and response to ST-Elevation Heart Attack (STEMI) patients. I currently serve as a Steering Group Member at Virginia Heart Attack Coalition/Mission Lifeline and Co-chair for our local Eastern Region Team, along with Dr. Shon Chakrabarti. The Eastern Region is comprised of the following cities and counties: Chesapeake, Franklin, Hampton, Newport News, Norfolk, Poquoson, Portsmouth, Suffolk , Virginia Beach, Williamsburg, Accomack, Essex, Gloucester, Isle of Wight, James City, King and Queen, King William, Lancaster, Mathews, Middlesex, Northhampton, Northumberland, Richmond, Southampton, Westmoreland, and York.Recently the Tidewater hospitals and EMS agencies were part of a study with Duke University and AHA to reduce mortality from ST Elevation Myocardial Infarction (STEMI). The study, STEMI Accelerator II was focused on reducing first medical contact (FMC) to device times. Over the 4 quarters of 2016 we saw an overall reduction in the time for treatment of a STEMI patient. Our multidisciplinary team continues to have monthly leadership calls and quarterly face to face meetings where we discuss best practices and our regional system of care.
