About Gabriel Ma

I am a hard-working, academically ambitious student studying at the University of Toronto. In hopes of pursuing a physician-scientist career, I am doing an immunology specialist, statistics major, and math minor. Having self-studied the MCAT in grade 12, as well as astronomy and physics during undergrad, I have a strong ability to teach myself and a passion for learning. If I can choose between an easy or hard course, I'll take the hard one in a heartbeat.

    The Taxidis lab uses mouse models to understand how neuron firing patterns change as mice learn to perform a behavioural task. I'm also in charge of all other volunteers where I assign lab tasks and train them as necessary.

    Iris Cohn's lab works in pharmacogenetics and aims to develop new and improve existing pharmacogenetic guidelines used in patient care. I analyzed 80 patient charts for relevant information and organized a list of 200 patients from whom data can be collected for a new study that hopes to investigate the connection between genotype and a commonly used drug (let's say drug A) that doesn't have official pharmacogenetic guidelines. Through a literature review, I also updated a master list of drug A - gene interactions.

    In Iris Cohn's lab, I took on a joint project between SickKids and the Cardiac Genome Clinic to evaluate the utility of pharmacogenetic testing in pediatric cardiac patients and increase equity in patient care. By using public databases to learn the frequencies of clinically relevant genetic variants in different racial and ethnic groups, my work updated the targeted genotyping panel that SickKids uses for patient care.
