Qriously was a London-based start-up focused on mobiles, specialized to deliver questions to consumers instead of advertisements. We measured real-time sentiment and opinions, across the U.S., the U.K. and other markets with a major smartphone presence.Our mission was to revolutionize the way consumers can pay for content; instead of being forced to stare at an advertisement that may not be relevant for them, we could give them an opportunity to voice their opinion instead, anonymously.My role involved planning and designing surveys, analyzing their results, and thinking of interesting questions to ask people.

Dunedin, New Zealand

This position involved designing, implementing and reporting on a project to understand and quantify road safety in the Otago region, and to use the project as a base for road safety policymaking in the region. Following initial success, Environment Southland requested I produce similar work for them. Data collection involved liaising with New Zealand Police, ACC (New Zealand’s state-owned injury insurance provider), and New Zealand’s Ministry of Health in order to obtain a broad picture of road safety issues in the region and gain insight into each dataset’s strengths and weaknesses. I integrated the findings from each dataset and used them to produce a key guide to the major road safety issues in the region. This document proved useful for policymakers, and is currently the major force behind the Regional Road Safety Strategy’s development in the Otago region.Additional responsibilities included presenting these findings to stakeholder groups, including Police, ACC, University of Otago staff at the Injury Prevention Research Unit (IPRU), and roading managers at both Environment Southland and the Otago Regional Council. I also produced a full scientific report, detailing all findings of the research, as well as a more general report suitable for an educated non-expert.

My responsibilities involved using a LIBS (Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectrometer) instrument to perform data collection, and performing maintenance on the relevant equipment. I also implemented a number of pilot studies into the potential use of this instrument in a forensic setting, particularly in detection of chemical residues at a crime scene. My internship involved the analysis of over 200 samples, from glass found at a crime scene to common asparagus seeds and Australian moth wings.This role involved database maintenance, integration of multiple datasets, and multivariate statistical analysis using R.
