Bpp Legal Advice Clinic For Housing

London, England, United Kingdom

Whilst working as a Student Adviser at BPP Legal Advice Clinic I undertook client interviews and adapted well to speaking to clients. I was praised by the supervising solicitor for my strong interpersonal skills. I also responded to clients' issues by writing letters of advice. I communicated with clients and liaised with supervising solicitors where appropriate. This helped solidify my legal research skills, whilst also thoroughly enjoying the experience. I had to balance my workload for the clinic with preparing for my LPC assignments and exams. This portrays my ability to manage my own workload in a busy environment. I constructed a positive and professional relationship with clients and was praised by them for my supportive manner and my straightforward advice, which was of the high standard expected by BPP. This shows my understanding of and commitment to client care.

Fundraiser

London, United Kingdom

My role had a dual purpose: firstly, to raise awareness about human rights abuses in Yemen. Amnesty had just recently won a monumental case, which used the law to successfully prove that the UK Government was acting illegally by selling over £4.7 billion worth of arms to the Saudi coalition and put a stop to new contracts being formed. This reinforced my belief that when people come together on an issue a difference can be made, especially using the law. My role was also to collect funds: inspiring people to join Amnesty and donate through face-to-face conversations, which I instigated with members of the public. Each conversation was unique; thus, I improvised and modified my pitch depending on who it was aimed at. I maintained a confident demeanour when speaking to people. This was a rewarding opportunity, enabling me to interact with a variety of people, every day in a different location in London. I met people from all walks of life but always found something which we shared. It was hard getting people to stop and give us a chance, as everyone has a busy life, but it made me push my boundaries. This experience helped me achieve a greater level of resilience, as I had to persevere despite the fact people often do not stop.

Sep 2019 - Nov 2019

Work Experience

London, England, United Kingdom

I shadowed a prominent Human Rights Queen’s Counsel on an Immigration case, following it through the Privy Council. The first-hand experience watching the case was fundamental in imparting knowledge and insight on the court procedure. I was able to see the tangible difference that the law can make to the lives of individuals, motivating me further to continue working towards my dream goal of being a Human Rights Lawyer. I demonstrated knowledge of Immigration through my previous experience working in Greece, which was helpful to the Lawyers involved who were thankful for a different perspective. In addition, I built connections with lawyers in the field, building on my confident communication skills. I was part of the team of lawyers and paralegals sharing stories and experiences. I was inspired seeing lawyers use litigation with the direct benefit of helping people. Understanding the interaction between solicitors and barristers was also significant.

Project Lead

Intervolve

Larissa, Greece

Working for an NGO in Koutsochero Refugee Camp gave me invaluable experience. I started as a general volunteer but was promptly promoted to Project Leader as I demonstrated leadership skills. I was in charge of the English Class and the Women’s Center where I provided apposite activities for those involved. I formed a safe space, where everyone felt like they were part of a team, where we worked together towards common goals. I increased their confidence by ensuring they were praised for their efforts. This also crucially empowered them to understand and defend their rights. I cared for children and adults of all ages, many of whom could not speak English. I showed a flexible style of leadership according to what their demands were. I advised all the English teachers on the most effective ways of teaching. I prepared bi-weekly reports for the NGO coordinators with different ideas and proposals and communicated with UN representatives when they came to see the camp. I gained experience problem solving, as there was always a problem to solve, and I was quickly able to anticipate problems. I gained hugely from the experience, not only from the tasks and duties, but also from the refugees themselves, as through their reactions to highly stressful situations they taught me a new level resilience. Most importantly, through working with people from completely different cultures, religions, backgrounds and experiences, I appreciated the importance of the common humanity binding us all together.
