As a graduate student, I worked as a teaching assistant in the Preschool Room at the Rita Gold Early Childhood Center:- Committed 12-35 hours per week in the Preschool Room across Fall, Spring, and Summer semesters- Encouraged preschoolers’ involvement in: classroom meetings, independent play, opportunities for setting boundaries with other classmates (e.g. no touch boundaries, less aggressive boundaries, pointing out body language of a classmate in response to certain behavior)- Aided preschoolers in following health guidelines due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic (e.g. helping younger children wash hands after outside play, consistent reminders to keep mask on)- Provided space for children’s voices to be heard and engaged in discussion rather than overly narrating what children are doing - Paid close attention to detail throughout the school day in order to write observational posts for the preschoolers’ parents- Utilized skills from mental health counseling graduate degree such as active listening, empathetic understanding, problem solving skills, observation skills, stress management, cultural sensitivity, and creating a safe and supportive environment - Incorporated SEL skills alongside kids via "Spot of Emotions" book series to promote emotion regulation and language development- Translated and communicated alongside a Spanish-speaking preschooler with an intermediate level of Spanish

As an undergraduate student, I volunteered my time as a research lab assistant for the Biology, Early Experiences, and Developmental Lab, or BEED Lab, on the University of Georgia campus. This lab was interested in nature and nurture, specifically how nurture (one's social environment) influences nature (one's biology). Our focus was on how early adversity impacts adolescent development, specifically females in the pubertal transition. We studied how certain family members might act as buffers against stress, and further promote recovery for young girls during the pubertal transition. As a research assistant, I evaluated informed consent and other ethical procedures and received training in recruiting participants. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, I also was a part of the process to innovate new roles for research assistants according to safety measures (e.g. preparing for virtual lab appointments).
