About Gareth Marks
A Head of Faculty for The Arts and Technical Theatre and Head of Drama with 16 years of teaching experience (most of which as Head of Faculty or Head of Department) in both International and British state education environments and vast experience of teaching the International Baccalaureate, A-Level, IGCSE and GCSE syllabi. I spent the first 10 years of my working life as an actor, where I performed in theatre ranging from Shakespeare to Physical Theatre, Children's Theatre to Street/ Circus Theatre and with organisations such as The Royal Shakespeare Company and The BBC. During this time I led acting courses at various renowned Drama Schools and then progressed into teaching full time, following a PGCE at Central School of Speech and Drama. I draw on my experience in professional theatre, alongside my experience gained in the British State Education System and International Schooling. I am currently teaching A-Level and IGCSE, but also have years of experience teaching IB, where my students achieved an average of 87.5% 6/7s in Theatre, through a course designed to encourage independent, creative theatre practitioners with a wide range of theatrical knowledge and experiences. My IGCSE Drama students meanwhile have achieved 72.4% A/A* during my tenure and we have seen numbers grow from 12- 40 for IGCSE. Our students have had the opportunity to do week-long workshops with Frantic Assembly, Gecko and Zen Zen Zo and workshops in mask from Kevin Tomlinson puppetry from Lucy Tuck from Handspring Puppet Co, Butoh from Dai Matsuoka (Sankai Juku). Students have also visited Bangkok, as part of the FOBISIA Drama Festival, which I am actively involved in. My students theatre education includes seeing shows by Robert Lepage, Theatre de Complicite, Pina Bausch, Bristol Old Vic and Handspring Puppet, Gecko Theatre. Alongside a passion for Theatre, I am a mountain-biker, hiker and skier. Head Of Faculty- Creative And Technical Arts
As Head of Faculty I have been instrumental in setting up our inaugural Arts Festival. This Festival follows the model of Arts Festivals from my previous role at NLCS, Jeju and features performances, workshops from visiting artists, concerts and the intention is that the majority of the work is student generated. I am a firm believer that through mounting their own productions, exhibitions, concerts and pop-up events that the students develop skills far beyond the excellent Arts provision that we offer. The Festival opens up innovative ways of using theatre and non-theatre spaces around the school. The Faculty meet regularly and work collaboratively to inspire our students through innovative Schemes of Learning and provide excellent co-curricular opportunities. As Head of Drama, the academic standards remain very high, with some of the best IGCSE results in the school. In recent months our students have continued to create innovative Devised and Scripted work, working in a socially distanced way, as S.O.Ps dictate. Myself and these students have shared the work we have done to appreciative audiences online through FOBISIA (Federation of British International Schools in Asia) Professional Development workshops, demonstrating techniques and some of our exciting discoveries. Each year the department performs: A Whole School Musical- Guys and Dolls, Into the Woods- Large ensemble casts, double-cast principal roles.A Senior School Play- either devised or scripted and open to all-comers IGCSE Devised and Scripted, Monologue Public PerformancesA-Level Public Performances Showcases of student work at KS3- Commedia, 'The Gruffalo'- a play devised for the Early Years of our school.Students have enjoyed workshops from the likes of Dai Matsuoka- Butoh (Sankai Juku) and Simone Tani- Clown and Buffon.Progress was hindered but certainly not unduly affected by Covid with excellent 'Lockdown Horror Films' and winners in the FOBISIA Monologue Challenge.
