About Garry Finch

I’ve been part of the fast-changing internet industry since 1998. I have enjoyed the challenge of delivering some of the early WAP sites for large magazine sites through to global e-commerce sites where rapid growth, international expansion and scaling has been key to business success. An experienced mentor and manager, an evangelist for data, UX, experimentation and learning and how that can make a massive difference to your business. I have worked in key roles on many projects from lead developer through to technical architect and heading up a team of around 35 developers delivering new sites and new features on top of a platform supporting over 160 websites. My recent roles have been pulling all that experience together in product roles across a range of products including e-commerce, saas solutions and back-office systems.I am always looking to put my broad experience to good use, especially when it's driving user value by working with stakeholders to prioritise effort, showing the impact the work has had and learning from whether the outcomes align with the initial hypothesis.I am also a bit of a LEGO geek. Isn't everyone?

Listed skills include E Commerce, Web Development, Html, User Experience, and 36 others.

Delivering talks and seminars is an area I am keen to do more of and work through to doing these at universities and meetups. UX isn't just the responsibility of one team. It's a cultural shift for the whole business, so helping to start that cultural shift in a company of around 3000 people was indeed a challenge and something that is likely to take a lot longer to embed fully. As the Head Of UX Development for The Hut Group, I was responsible for the development and improvements to well over 160 websites which include sites like Myprotein.com, TheHut.com, Zavvi.com, Lookfantastic.com and the UK Nintendo Store. My involvement over the years has been vital in supporting the growth of the business with the development of our international platform allowing rapid creation of sites to support specific languages while still retaining the overall brand of the site… Show more As the Head Of UX Development for The Hut Group, I was responsible for the development and improvements to well over 160 websites which include sites like Myprotein.com, TheHut.com, Zavvi.com, Lookfantastic.com and the UK Nintendo Store. My involvement over the years has been vital in supporting the growth of the business with the development of our international platform allowing rapid creation of sites to support specific languages while still retaining the overall brand of the site. Also, the development of our mobile platform to serve what is now the bulk of the traffic to the sites. As the team grew to around 35, my role shifted from a hands-on position to a technical manager and product owner for the front end of the websites, even though there was no official product structure at the time. I would work with all teams across the business to gather requirements, generate high-level user stories and prioritise the work with the business and development teams.I was responsible for building and structuring the team by recruiting the right people and providing a mentor role, putting my years of experience to good use. The challenges of supporting a large number of sites coupled with a rapidly growing business have been hard but having the good team around you to rely on makes the problems a little easier to overcome. I want to think that the success of the company goes some way to show my progress in this role.Developing new talent is essential, and this role also allowed me to be involved with the Web Development degree course at Edge Hill University, and it's been great to see graduates from that course joining The Hut Group and doing well. Being able to share my experience with people about to embark on their careers and to help mould the course to provide better grads has been rewarding as is something I am looking forward to doing more of in the future.
