I've been in the biomedical engineering field since my PhD days at Leeds. I spent most of my career as Reader and later Professor of Rehabilitation Engineering at Newcastle University. My research there focused on the biomechanics and function of the upper limb. I led a team (CREST developing a computational model of the human shoulder which subsequently enabled us to develop a novel reverse anatomy shoulder replacement (VAIOS manufactured by JRI Ltd). At the same time members of my research group studied the biomechanical issues around the rehabilitation of the upper limb after stroke and other neurological damage. This led to novel approaches to the definition and measurement of spasticity.After retiring from Newcastle University, I took on the role of Head of Research at ADL Smartcare Ltd which provides expert systems to support the provision of assistive devices to allow older people to remain independent at home. This work, in collaboration with epidemiologist colleagues at Newcastle has allowed us to develop the "LifeCurve" concept which can calibrate functional decline based on a hierarchy of difficulty of a set of 14 ADL tasks. This is now becoming an accepted method for rehabilitation professionals to assess the level of decline both of individuals and of populations.
