Gary Butler Work Experience Details
  • Gab Designs
    Proprietor
Gab Designs Jan 1992 - Present
    Harpenden, Herts
Having been made redundant from Printed Circuit Photographers, due to a change in direction for the company, the natural progression was to continue in the PCB business and set up a PCB design Service as a sole trader. Armed with a redundant customer base from Printed Circuit Photographers I started trading as GaB Design and Consultancy.I have continued to use Cadstar as a main software tool to design Single, Double, Multi layer and Flexi/Flexi-rigid boards incorporating conventional and surface mount technologies.Liaising with clients has led to the creation of dedicated services and routines specific to individual company requirements.Repeat work resulted from an extremely good relationship with the clients and new clients have taken an interest through good ‘word of mouth’ advertising.Over the years the Company has prospered and has been able to keep up with new technology. Equipment has been upgraded and purchased to keep up with client ever changing requirements and more time allocated to offer additional services as well as continue to achieve ‘right first time’ designs.

Voluntary Work Experience :- Cub Scout Leader 2009 - Present
    10Th Harpenden Scout Group
10th HarpendenScout GroupHarpenden(2009 to Present)I have been a Cub Leader at the 10th Harpenden Scout Group since 2009. The role entails an active role in organising weekly meetings, organising any camps for the group, which normally include an Overnight Camp, Spring Camp and Summer Camp. I am responsible for keeping the records, for both Cubs and Parents, up to date with a dedicated software package including a parent rota for each weekly meeting, ensuring personal data is up to date, DBS / CRB is current for any parents and the allocation of badges for the Cubs.To pass on valuable life skills and experiences whilst having fun is great for the Cubs and a very rewarding role.
  • Printed Circuit Photographers
    Pcb Design Draughtsman
Printed Circuit Photographers Jul 1988 - Jan 1991
    Old Stevenage
Responsible for setting up a design facility within the company together with the Managing Director and Sales team to service a wide range of customers and to complement the existing Photo plotting business. The design stage would take the customer from Schematic to Board Manufacture (a process which was initially contracted out but later done in house). It also involved the design of Single-sided, Double-sided and Multi-layer boards with conventional and surface mount devices. Both digital and analogue designs were undertaken and where required Manufacturing Drawings were also produced. As the sole Design Draughtsman within the Company I was responsible for liaising with the Customer directly and ensuring the work was correct when delivered. Designing on a Contract basis also required the need to be familiar with a number of software packages, the following of which I was expected to use daily:ORCAD SCHEMATIC DESIGNCADSTAR PCB DESIGNAUTOCAD MECHANICAL DESIGNOther packages also used include:VUTRAX PCB & SCHEMATIC DESIGNThe companies Photo plotting environment involved me in the Post Processing of other customer files from the above mentioned packages as well as the Processing of Gerber photo plot data.I was actively involved in setting up the Modem facility, including writing software to ease the transfer of files over the phone, and sorting out any problems.Mechanical Drawings were produced using Autocad from Customer sketches, which then could be pen plotted or alternatively photo plotted in a single or stepped form. I was responsible for the pricing of design and related work and for obtaining Board Quotations if required. With a good knowledge of MS-DOS I invariably used it to control Customers design files with respect to system organization and backup.
  • Marconi Instruments
    Pcb Design Draughtsman
    Marconi Instruments Mar 1988 - Jul 1988
    St. Albans, Longacres
I joined as a P.C.B. Design Draughtsman as part of a small team working very closely with the Engineers. I used my previous experience to modify existing taped up artworks, learnt to use the Microquad workstation to modify and layout new designs and was trained on, the now redundant, Marconi Midata system. I became aware of the PCAD PCB Design package but did not gain enough experience to become a competent user. Although only a short stay, the experience I acquired in that time was of great value especially since the majority of boards were mainly analogue in design.
  • Giltspur Engineering Design Ltd
    Cae Systems Supervisor
Giltspur Engineering Design Ltd Jul 1979 - Mar 1988
    Borehamwood, Herts
I joined as a Trainee Draughtsman on day release and initially trained in basic draughting techniques. I was then trained in the layout of PCB's and in the production of associated mechanical drawings including schematics. This involved manual design followed by taping up, then progressed to digitising and photo plotting on a Gerber PC833 digitizing system. CAD within the company then expanded and I received training on the Racal Redac Mini design station, a PDP 11/34 based system. In 1985 I was upgraded to Section Leader with regards to all CAD work at the Borehamwood office and was responsible for maintaining the workflow and supervision of staff. I was trained on a VAX 11/780 with the intention of a possible upgrade to Systems Manager. I attended a VAX/VMS Systems Management course at Digitals training centre as well as completing a VAX/VMS Utilities and Commands course.I received training for the Racal Redac Redboard and Redlog PC based systems as well as attending a DSM6 training course at Racal Redac's in Tewkesbury. In 1986 I was appointed to the post of CAE Systems Supervisor with the responsibility for the day to day running of all CAE systems and staff training for the Gerber, Redac and VAX 11/780 systems. I continued to design P.C.B's, which were mainly double-sided or multi-layer digital boards training staff on the systems when necessary. While CAE within the company continued to progress I became familiar with the Anvil and Autocad mechanical design software packages and was able to assist those using them. I also became responsible for carrying out all software upgrades and writing simple routines to simplify tasks.
