My role as a postdoctoral researcher in the laboratory of Dr. Joanna C. Chiu involves (i) the investigation of posttranslational mechanisms regulating sleep and circadian physiology; and (ii) the development of an animal model for genetic diseases using Drosophila as a model organism. To accomplish these objectives, I am responsible for planning and executing various experiments using diverse molecular biology and biochemical techniques both in vivo and in vitro. I am also responsible for developing, optimizing, and validating new protocols as necessary in instances where established protocols are absent or unsatisfactory. I provide weekly updates to my supervisor on progress and propose solutions to any technical challenges I face.In addition to pursuing my primary research objectives, I am also responsible for writing proposals and preparing figures for grant acquisition from external agencies. Additionally, I am responsible for routine maintenance of the laboratory’s Drosophila stocks. I also serve as a Laboratory Safety Coordinator of the laboratory, with responsibilities ranging from providing initial and refresher training to laboratory personnel to devising and implementing practical safety solutions to remedy any safety violation. Finally, as a senior member of the laboratory, I am responsible for mentoring undergraduate students on both experimental techniques and soft skills necessary for a successful career in science.

I completed my PhD training with Dr. R. David Britt at University of California, Davis. During my PhD, I explored the utility of electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy in quantifying protein-protein interactions using the posttranslational cyanobacterial circadian clock (Kai clock) in Synechococcus elongatus as a model system in collaboration with Dr. Andy LiWang at University of California, Merced.

As an undergraduate research assistant, I worked under Prof. M.C. Chan on laser induced fluorescence (LIF) of diatomic species such as scandium nitride (ScN) and yttrium phosphide (YP). I was exposed to modern spectroscopic instrumentation and learnt about handling lasers and vacuum systems. I was tasked with installing and testing a variable temperature flow cell for Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy to monitor gelation peak shift in organogelators. The results were published in Chem. Eur. J. (DOI: 10.1002/chem.201300682).
