ResearchGary Clough was initially introduced to public health as a result of his wider reading whilst studying for a degree in Human Biology and Infectious Diseases, during which he took the opportunity to complete an internship in a university public health unit. Public Health became a key focus thereafter, orientating his thinking into targeting preventative care, as opposed to his initial goal of supporting primary care. When Gary joined the Public Health department he was able to continue his research interests, and has contributed to several European urban health projects including EURO-URHIS 2, where he had particular responsibility for the youth survey and Urban Health Centres Europe 2.0 where he led on evaluating health and social care needs of senior citizens in Greater Manchester. He has led on a number of Greater Manchester health evaluations, particularly focusing on Hepatitis C and immunisation. He has worked on evaluations of cancer services in the Greater Manchester area in partnership with Macmillan Cancer Awareness and the Christie Foundation Trust. Gary has also led of an evaluation of the provision of e-cigarettes to the homeless population during the pandemic in Greater Manchester.TeachingGary has taught on the Master in Public Health Programme, University of Manchester since 2017 teaching Evidence Based Practice, Communicable Disease Control, Health Services Management, Health Systems Challenges in Low and Middle Income Countries, Digital Public Health and Climate Change and Health.As of September 2022 Gary will be the Academic Lead for the Communicable Disease Control and Poster modules on the new BSc Public Health Programme, University of Manchester.

This involved managing a small team of researchers from The University of Manchester and Blackpool Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust to coordinate with Shelter and Making Smoking History Greater Manchester Health and Social Care Partnership to evaluate the delivery of e-cigarettes to the homeless population across Greater Manchester. I was responsible for gaining ethical approval for the project, designing the protocols that the team adhered to, coordinating the data collection, analysing and reporting on the data. -

Research AssistantThe University Of Manchester Apr 2013 - Oct 2016South Manchester And Tameside & GlossopAs part of the Urban Health Centers Europe 2.0 (UHCE) project, the Manchester Urban Collaboration on Health department at The University of Manchester has been commissioned by the European Commission to perform a data collection exercise on the over 75 population in South Manchester and Tameside & Glossop local authorities. The project will approach a total of 500 senior citizens in these areas and researchers will arrange 'home visits' with participants and conduct a validated questionnaire which focuses on falls prevention, frailty, social isolation and polypharmacy. In addition the researchers will take two measurements (mid-upper arm circumference and hand grip strength) which are indicators of frailty, and perform a home hazard assessment which indicates trip/fall hazards.The outcome of this project is to provide a report on each participant to their respective general practitioner so that any health problems can be addressed at an earlier stage. Furthermore, participants in Tameside & Glossop will be followed up every three months to see if the patient reports have had an impact on their health and social care. All participants in both areas will receive a 12 month home visit follow up to evaluate the impact of the recommended care pathways. -

It is hosted every other year by a select institution from around the globe and this year will be held for the first time on UK soil when it comes to Manchester in March 2014. The city’s rich and important history provides the perfect backdrop for such an esteemed event with the conference being held in the heart of the city centre. Delegates can expect plenary talks from some of the biggest and most influential names in urban health and other related fields, along with workshops and exhibits from organisations across the world of health and beyond.As Communications Officer I have the sole responsibility to spearhead the recruitment drive of the conference, with particular emphasis on networking with key international delegates to ensure ICUH 2014 is the most popular conference to date. -
Project AssistantThe University Of Manchester Oct 2012 - Feb 2013Translational MedicineI have facilitated with the EURO-URHIS 2 project which has developed the largest urban health data set in the world. My particular role has focused on the youth survey recruitment aspect of the research. This involves accumulating data from Greater Manchester, Birmingham, Cardiff and Glasgow. The outcome of this research is to highlight detrimental attributes in each of the PCTs and inform policy makers so that the lifestyle of the population in said areas can be improved.I am also leading the PHIRE initiative in the UK which requires Country Informants (CIs) based around Europe to evaluate EURO-URHIS 1.I have previously worked to disseminate the MMR vaccine around the North West of England and to raise awareness on health concerns in primary schools which has had resounding success. -

This focused on the vulnerable people of Manchester who were most susceptible to contracting the disease (drug-users, the homeless, etc). The research involved the implementation of education programmes and direct advertising to decrease the number of cases of Hepatitis C in Greater Manchester.
