What started as a personal investment became a personal, voluntary exercise in fleet electrification.—Leveraging my industry contacts, I engaged an international energy utility to help conduct a fleet operations assessment to prioritize routes for electrification.—Provided input on the HVIP ISEF program and participated in statewide CARB/CEC working groups to present unique challenges faced by Independent Service Providers like ours.—Assessed available grant/incentive programs including air district, utility, local, regional, state, and federal programs. Compared to our business context and needs to select the best programs to pursue. Considered features & requirements such as mileage, scrappage, monitoring, small business, location, disadvantaged community status.—Worked closely with our managing partner to understand operational needs, financial capacity, and truck replacement schedules. Prioritized trucks and routes for electrification, monetized risks (e.g. for electricity costs) and rewards (fuel and maintenance savings).—Organized vehicle OEM demo for the benefit of all contractor-owners at our terminal, visited EV truck dealers, participated in ride-and-drive events, obtained quotes from dealers/manufacturers.—Worked with dealers to secure HVIP ISEF funding for 4 trucks in its first year and 2 trucks in a subsequent year, a substantial portion of our 15-truck fleet.—Achieved Platinum Level Sustainable Fleet certification through our efforts.
