My job included reporting, writing, editing, photo editing, assigning stories, web posting, budget creation and management, and some vendor selection. I also wrote and edited features and news for other sections when needed. The Travel section was named among the top three in the country eight times during the time I was editor, including three of my last four years.

Long Beach

I took a semester off from college to work for THUMS (acronym for Texaco Humboldt Unocal Mobil Shell) on the oil islands in Long Beach harbor. As part of a THUMS unit called CCC, my primary duty was to don a disposable neck to ankle "clean suit," with goggles and mask and use an ultra-high pressure hose to clean wellheads after the rig moved off. I left to return to my studies at UC Berkeley.
