Management team of DCD Heavy Engineering identified a new market in South Africa in the renewable (wind) energy sector. The DCD Board approved this Project and Gary was given the responsibility of managing the entire Project.Feasibility studies, Process analysis, Factory design, Equipment procurement, Equipment installation and commissioning and ProductionizationApart from managing the building of the factory he was also responsible for: Compiling budget and tenders for wind towers Planning for materials, labour and bought-outs Development of process sheets Plant maintenance

Scheduling Manager:Designed and implemented a scheduling system based on Theory of Constraints (TOC). The need for this type of system was: Accurately forecasting of Project completion dates Identify constraints and resource requirements Generate a "Work to List" to ensure on time completion of Projects Provides accurate information to Management, Project Engineers, Human Resources and Marketing Planning Manager:In charge of the Planning Department that had to generate planning for the procurement of raw materials, buy-outs and sub-contracting, as well as detail planning of hours for the fabrication and machine shops. All cost variations exceeding 5% had to be analysed and reported. R&D Manager:Cost reductions and capacity enhancement.Projects that were successfully implemented include: The introduction of 2 self levelling machines to overcome the bottle-neck on vertical borers and lathes. Modification of a 5,5m swing diameter lathe to a 8,6m swing diameter The introduction of rotators to reduce Crane "Waiting Time" Introduction of carbide insert drills to reduce cost and time of mill flange drilling

Managed the planning, scheduling and logistics departments Ensured that the fabrication and machine shops got given clear targets to be adhered to, to ensure Project schedules were not compromised. Over time requirements identified and communicated. Drew up plans to correct slippage on Projects. Delegated responsibility for the adherence to Project plans to the Shop Managers and Superintendents Managed the logistics department which included sand blasting, painting, packaging and transport. Ensure that these activities took place on time that consumables were bought and that the transport arrangements, permits etc. did not delay delivery.

Managed various Capital Equipment Projects mainly for the Mining, Cement, Metallurgical, Material handling and Defense sectors. The majority of these were for the international clients. Projects Managed:Stacker Reclaimers , Mozal Pot Shells Phase 1 & 2 , Converters , Scrubbers Dragline Bases , Crushers , Cement Kilns , BALL and SAG Mills , Mill Bearings , Military Vehicles Hulls and Turrets

Dealt with existing and potential clients on a daily basis promoting the company and its capabilities. Handled Projects form inquiry stage through to order adjudication. To ensure inquiries were processed, scope and technical matters clarified, estimating done and tenders submitted timeously. On receipt of an order it was evaluated to ensure that scope and technical aspects were in accordance with the enquiry and tender. Any differences were discussed and re-negotiated, prior to handing the Project over to the contracts department.
