I am freelance Linux/FreeBSD consultant and writer from the UK and have been working with open-source software since the mid 1990s. I first saw Linux while completing my degree in Business Information Systems at Portsmouth University. Then while working for Digital Equipment Corp I came in to contact with DEC's Ultrix and later Digital UNIX (formerly OSF/1). While developing enterprise software for DEC on its UNIX platforms I became more and convinced of the benefits of open source and open-source Unix-like operating systems like Linux and FreeBSD. After leaving DEC I became a software contractor and after moving to Romania in 2003 I became a freelance Linux/FreeBSD consultant and writer and started publishing articles for the Open Source Technology Group (owners of Linux.com and SourceForge.net). This then led to me writing his first book with Packt.Specialties: Articles, books, consultancy about Open Source and Linux technologies.
Listed skills include Linux, Programming, Unix, Open Source, and 29 others.

As a senior member of the design and programming team worked on a Digital TV (DVB/MPEG2) scrambler. Using C and C++ designed and implemented several key components of the scrambler system including and embedded web server. The Scrambler ran under a real time operating system (PSOS) on a PowerPC.
Worked in a small team developing a network level (TCP/IP & Ethernet) gateway to translate database requests from one network type to another and then reverse the translation for the responses. The product was developed on Digital Unix in C for a real time environment with fail over.
Last project at Digital was to work on Unix writing C code for Digital’s own Network Computer project. Before this worked as part of a client team writing a Java client as part of a client/server solution, using Symantec’s Visual Café. Previous to this worked for AltaVista, a division of Digital, work included customer presentations and client development in Java. Before this, designed, built and tested the AltaVista Mail Gateways for cc:Mail and Microsoft Mail on Windows NT in C. Previously worked on a X.400 to Internet mail gateway, working in C on Unix. Prior to this, designed and wrote a test client for Digital’s X.400 product; written in C on VMS and later ported to Ultrix, Digital Unix and Windows NT. Soon after joining Digital, became the QA engineer for a mail gateway product, designing, writing and implementing test suites for the product. Joined Digital, after University, to work in a small team developing and maintaining problem-reporting tools, in C.
