Profile bio

About Gaurav Agarwal

I am a scientist with interests in understanding complex biological mechanisms using big data (next generation sequencing) and computational and molecular approaches. In my current role as Bioinformatics Lead at CoverCress Inc., my efforts are aligned to meet the growing demand for renewable fuels while improving farmers' bottom lines. I am motivated to achieve the "Farm to Fuel" mission by tapping into the potential of the innovative crop field pennycress, which offers benefits for multiple end-uses such as low carbon feedstock to produce renewable diesel, sustainable aviation fuel, and high-protein animal feed. With over ten years of experience and expertise at institutes and universities of great national and international repute, I have demonstrated my abilities through global collaborations, high-impact publications (including Nature Genetics, Molecular Plant, PNAS, Plant Biotechnology Journal), and by working in multi-disciplinary teams. With over 35 publications in the areas of plant and bacterial genomics, I have identified genes, gene clusters, and pathways responsible for pathogenicity in pathogens and for resistance against pathogenicity and abiotic stress in host plants.India, USA

Jun 2024 - Present

Research Associate

East Lansing, Michigan, United States

My current research focus is to identify the diverse open chromatin regions in natural octoploid strawberry and a suite of resynthesized inter- and intra- specific hybrids to understand and investigate the epigenome and subgenome expression dominance in octoploid strawberry.

Jul 2021 - Jun 2024

Postdoctoral Research Associate

Tifton, Georgia

In Department of Plant Pathology at the University of Georgia, my research focus was both on the hosts and pathogens to identify genes involved in imparting resistance in hosts against pathogens and causing pathogenicity in bacteria.I developed pan-genomes of bacteria (Pantoea ananatis, Pantoea stewartii subs. indologens) conferring range of virulence on onions and carried out pan-genome-wide association study (Pan-GWAS) to predict pathogenicity genes associated with Center Rot of onion. On the host front, I evaluated the germplasm of Phaseolus vulgaris in response to cucurbit leaf crumple and Sida golden mosaic Florida virus. The phenotyping data along with the sequencing data is being used to carry out GWAS to identify disease resistant genes in P. vulgaris.

Mar 2018 - Jun 2021

Research Fellow

Tifton, Ga

I Identified the potential candidate genes responsible for leaf spot and Tomato Spotted Wilt Virus (TSWV) resistance in peanut using the whole genome re-sequencing data of two bi-parental RIL populations.

Jul 2016 - Feb 2018

Special Project Scientist

Icrisat, Hyderabad

• Identified, characterized and expression profiled the AP2/ERF TFs, small RNA biogenesis (gene family proteins) and HSP90 chaperones in legume crops. • Contributed in developing the first 58K SNP-array chip to aid genomics assisted breeding in peanut.• Insights into seed development, pant-pathogen interaction and abiotic stress responses in chickpea, pigeonpea and peanut using RNA-seq data.
