Associate Staff Scientist

Current

Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, United States

• Investigated the regulatory role of B Cell Maturation Antigen (BCMA) in Experimental Autoimmune Encephalomyelitis (EAE) using BCMA-/- mice compared to BCMA+/+ mice. • Discovered that BCMA is expressed on plasma cells, microglia, and inflammatory macrophages within the CNS but not on T cells or neutrophils. • Identified a novel role for BCMA in regulating the phenotype and function of microglia and macrophages in both the CNS and peripheral immune tissues. • Provided insights into the immunopathogenesis of neuroautoimmune diseases by uncovering a new pathway controlled by BAFF and APRIL signaling through BCMA.• Performed multifaceted role of securing research funding, disseminating research findings through manuscript writing, and actively engaging with the global scientific community by delivering invited talks at international conferences.• I played a role in training, mentoring, and offering valuable guidance to graduate students, technicians, and other essential team members to facilitate the successful execution of research projects.

Jul 2023 - Present

Assistant Staff Scientist

Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, United States

• Investigated the immune-mediated demyelinating disease, Multiple Sclerosis (MS), and its heterogeneity in onset and clinical course, with a particular focus on the sex differences in disease severity. • Uncovered a significant sex difference in EAE severity in BCMA-/- mice, where male mice exhibited a notably increased disease severity compared to females. • Actively engaged in ongoing research efforts to elucidate the specific mechanisms responsible for the observed sex differences in EAE severity, contributing to the understanding of immune-mediated neuroinflammation.• As a research leader, I took charge of planning and successfully orchestrating a variety of collaborative research initiatives that brought together both clinicians and scientists.• Effectively disseminated my significant research discoveries through the publication of manuscripts, as well as through the delivery of invited talks and presentations at seminars.• Provided guidance to students and essential research team members, facilitating their acquisition of diverse immunology and cell biology techniques and imparting comprehensive knowledge related to our research focus.

Jul 2020 - Jun 2023

Senior Postdoctoral Fellow

Oklahoma, United States

• Dedicated research efforts to unravel the multifaceted role of B cells in the context of multiple sclerosis (MS), where B cells have become a promising therapeutic target. • Investigated the effectiveness of anti-CD20 antibodies in depleting B cells as a treatment for MS, recognizing their potential to mitigate the disease. • Explored the paradoxical effects of TACI-Ig treatment, which blocks BAFF and APRIL, two cytokines crucial for B cell development and function, and observed an increase in disease activity in MS patients. • Utilized patient samples and animal models to elucidate key mechanisms underlying the inflammatory and anti-inflammatory functions of B cells in the context of MS. • Provided valuable data offering potential explanations for the paradoxical results observed in clinical trials involving anti-CD20 and TACI-Ig therapies for MS patients.• I disseminated pivotal research discoveries by authoring multiple manuscripts and delivering presentations on my research at numerous scientific conferences.• Oversaw the daily operations of the laboratory, including resource management, while also leading a team of essential personnel involved in collaborative clinical and research projects, providing training to research staff, and delivering presentations.

Jul 2018 - Jun 2020

Postdoctoral Research Fellow

Oklahoma City, Oklahoma Area

• Research focused on understanding the mechanism behind the efficacy of IFN-β therapy in Multiple Sclerosis (MS) patients. • Conducted a comprehensive phenotypic and functional characterization of B cells obtained from blood samples of MS patients receiving IFN-β therapy, comparing them to patients on different treatments and control groups. • Findings revealed that IFN-β treatment leads to increased expression of B cell-activating factor (BAFF) in myeloid cells. • The elevated BAFF levels, in turn, promote the expansion of transitional B cells in MS patients undergoing IFN-β therapy. • Transitional B cells possess regulatory functions in autoimmune diseases and have the capacity to produce significant amounts of interleukin-10 (IL-10). • IL-10 production by transitional B cells contributes to the suppression of antigen-mediated T cell activity, potentially benefiting the overall health of patients. • The data collectively suggests that in patients with Relapsing-Remitting MS (RRMS), IFN-β treatment increases BAFF expression, distinguishing it from systemic lupus erythematosus and neuromyelitis optica, as it favors a regulatory phenotype within the B cell population.

Oct 2014 - Jun 2018

Research Associate

Oklahoma City, Oklahoma Area

In my role as a Research Associate, I was engaged in a mouse model study focused on Acute Lung Infection. Our primary objective was to evaluate the impact of a surfactant protein on various immune cell populations, including T-cells, B cells, Neutrophils, Macrophages, and dendritic cells. Additionally, we aimed to investigate changes in inflammatory and physiological parameters within the mouse lung in response to challenges with lipopolysaccharide (LPS) or bacterial infection, specifically using a Pseudomonas strain. Furthermore, we examined the modulation of cytokines, encompassing both pro-inflammatory and anti-inflammatory types, as well as chemokines. The overarching goal was to discern how this peptide intervention influences these immune components, aiming for improvements in infection outcomes and the restoration of normal immune homeostasis. Our findings demonstrated that the surfactant peptide effectively intercalates with the LPS-induced TLR4 complex, initiating signaling processes that result in the suppression of lung inflammation.

Nov 2012 - Sep 2013

Doctoral Researcher

Inserm U576, University Of Nice Sophia Antipolis

Nice, Provence-Alpes-Côte D'Azur, France

Led five diverse projects focused on deciphering the contribution of immune cells to the pathophysiology of human infectious diseases:• First to publish a comprehensive analysis of immune cell activity at the site of infection, revealing the pivotal involvement of CD28- CD4 T cells in the process of bone erosion during bacterial bone infections in human subjects. • Reported the crucial role of TH17 cells in exacerbating the inflammatory cascade within the alveolar space during acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) in human patients. • Phenotypically characterized immune cells in human subjects with idiopathic CD4 T cell lymphocytopenia and sepsis, providing valuable insights into the immunological profiles associated with these conditions. • Leadership role in a clinical trial project investigating the efficacy of raltegravir in HIV patients, with a specific focus on evaluating immune cell recovery.

Sep 2008 - Jan 2013

Junior Research Fellow

New Delhi, Delhi, India

Molecular cloning and characterization of genes to increase the shelf Life of fruits and vegetables: In this research project, my focus was on identifying specific microRNAs (miRNAs) within the tomato plant that play a pivotal role in regulating the ripening process. Additionally, I aimed to elucidate the target genes of these miRNAs. The ultimate goal of this endeavor was to pave the way for the development of transgenic tomato plants with an extended shelf life of fruits by strategically delaying the natural ripening process.
