• Research focused on understanding the mechanism behind the efficacy of IFN-β therapy in Multiple Sclerosis (MS) patients. • Conducted a comprehensive phenotypic and functional characterization of B cells obtained from blood samples of MS patients receiving IFN-β therapy, comparing them to patients on different treatments and control groups. • Findings revealed that IFN-β treatment leads to increased expression of B cell-activating factor (BAFF) in myeloid cells. • The elevated BAFF levels, in turn, promote the expansion of transitional B cells in MS patients undergoing IFN-β therapy. • Transitional B cells possess regulatory functions in autoimmune diseases and have the capacity to produce significant amounts of interleukin-10 (IL-10). • IL-10 production by transitional B cells contributes to the suppression of antigen-mediated T cell activity, potentially benefiting the overall health of patients. • The data collectively suggests that in patients with Relapsing-Remitting MS (RRMS), IFN-β treatment increases BAFF expression, distinguishing it from systemic lupus erythematosus and neuromyelitis optica, as it favors a regulatory phenotype within the B cell population.

In my role as a Research Associate, I was engaged in a mouse model study focused on Acute Lung Infection. Our primary objective was to evaluate the impact of a surfactant protein on various immune cell populations, including T-cells, B cells, Neutrophils, Macrophages, and dendritic cells. Additionally, we aimed to investigate changes in inflammatory and physiological parameters within the mouse lung in response to challenges with lipopolysaccharide (LPS) or bacterial infection, specifically using a Pseudomonas strain. Furthermore, we examined the modulation of cytokines, encompassing both pro-inflammatory and anti-inflammatory types, as well as chemokines. The overarching goal was to discern how this peptide intervention influences these immune components, aiming for improvements in infection outcomes and the restoration of normal immune homeostasis.Our findings demonstrated that the surfactant peptide effectively intercalates with the LPS-induced TLR4 complex, initiating signaling processes that result in the suppression of lung inflammation.
