QB is working on developing novel single-molecule DNA sequencing technology. My work at QB involved:-Working with prototype instruments to support technology development-DNA sample prep, gel-electrophoresis, qPCR-Immobilization of oligonucleotides on semiconductor surfaces-Measurement of electrical conduction through single DNA molecules for DNA sequencing-Assay design and optimization-Device characterization using the scanning electron microscope-SOP generation and training

My research in this position focused on fabrication of solid-state nanopores in thin silicon nitride membranes and graphene sheets. We used these nanopores for single-molecule sensing of proteins and DNA. This single molecule technique gives access to different sub-populations of biomolecules existing in the solution which are generally masked by the bulk averaging used by other analytical techniques.

My work in this position involved rat brain micro-dissection for harvesting neural cells, neural cell culture, neural stem cell (neural and glial precursors) culture, electrode implantation in rat brains and immunocytostaining. Using these techniques we studied neural tissue inflammation around neural implants.

Fabrication of multilayer nanopore device for studying DNA translocation

Set-up nanopore sensing laboratory and trained students in protein detection using nanopores.

My work in this position involved design, fabrication and use of MEMS devices for patterning and culturing neurons. I routinely cultured rat primary hippocampal neurons in different culture conditions. I developed microfluidic neuron culture protocol which could be used to grow and maintain primary neurons in closed microchannels for over 1 month. I also integrated the microchannel device with multi-electrode array (MEA) for monitoring neural activity from the cultured neurons.
