I organize and oversee the WERC competition team for Cal Poly's Society of Environmental Engineers. This is an advisory role for student teams involved in in-depth research and design challenges focused on real-life issues. Industry leaders propose tasks each year that they are facing in the 'real world,' and students work to solve their challenges. I serve in an advisory role, connecting student teams with the resources they need and taking some administrative load from the student leaders.

Sprout Up organizes teams of motivated university students to instruct elementary and middle school students on environmental science. I am part of the San Luis Obispo chapter of Sprout Up in two capacities. First, I am an education liaison managing the curriculum we teach and organizing our instructor teams and local classrooms. This position involves curriculum design, administrative management, and volunteer coordination. I also teach in our classrooms 1-2 times per week, leading lessons to educate and empower the next generation of environmental stewards.

Cairo, Egypt

I participated in an international design competition focused on international cooperation and design. My student team, the International Wastewater Consultants, designed a wastewater treatment plant for the newly constructed city of New Mansoura, Egypt. Our design utilized moving bed biofilm reactors to process the wastewater of New Mansoura with 40% less energy demand and 5.5X less spatial requirement. From an initial field of ~50 teams, we were selected to travel on a State Department-sponsored trip to Egypt and present to a board of embassy representatives and engineers. On the off chance that anyone from HIVER reads this, I would like to extend a huge thank you for all of your hard work putting the trip together. Working with the Egyptian students under your expertise was an amazing educational opportunity. Seeing the culture and history of Cairo was a life-changing experience for which I am eternally grateful. I will cherish meeting with the Embassy, seeing the Association for the Protection of the Environment, and visiting the American University in Cairo for a long, long time.

Adminstrative and engineering lead for a student team researching the real-time quantification of microplastics in aqueous systems. We used a combination of fluorescence microscopy and automated digital imaging to rapidly quantify microplastics after a chemical pretreatment processed and prepared a business plan to take our product to market. Our device is recommended for patenting by NAVFAC EXWC and our results were published in IEEE Xplore journal.

Grand Canyon And American River

I worked three seasons as a raft guide on the Colorado and American rivers. Raft guiding required technical expertise for steering rafts down the river with high consequences for failure, as well as expertise in emergency and medical situations. Class III+ and Class III high volume experience. Paddle guiding and rowing. Specialized in historical and natural knowledge of the American river wwatershed.

Project manager for a seventh-month research and design project to process the carbon dioxide emissions from El Paso Electric Company and Las Cruces Utilities power plants. Designed both a bench- and full-scale system to eliminate carbon footprint by growing marketable products—Spirulina platensis algae and phycocyanin dye—on the flue gas. Our system was a profitable enterprise that benefited the operating company, consumer, and the planet.
