English Heritage is the government’s adviser on the historic environment, and my role involved ensuring that our advice about designation – listing buildings, scheduling monuments - was submitted to the Department for Culture Media and Sport as efficiently as possible. Managing a core team of 14, responsible for the quality assurance of advice, and the management of programmes and projects, I also had a wider remit for the whole of the designation process, across the regional teams who visit… Show more English Heritage is the government’s adviser on the historic environment, and my role involved ensuring that our advice about designation – listing buildings, scheduling monuments - was submitted to the Department for Culture Media and Sport as efficiently as possible. Managing a core team of 14, responsible for the quality assurance of advice, and the management of programmes and projects, I also had a wider remit for the whole of the designation process, across the regional teams who visit and assess properties – around 60 colleagues in all. I advised on tricky cases, and ensured that our work reflected developing policy – we worked closely with government to reform the system, and I was heavily involved in the development of a new Heritage Protection Bill, and then in implementing non-legislative reforms when this was put on hold. I continued to liaise with the DCMS to deal with both ongoing casework issues and further improvements to the system.
