Dr Gemma Crawford has more than 20 years of experience in the practice, advocacy, leadership, policy, teaching and research of health promotion and public health. Her work is underpinned by a commitment to 4-Es: evidence, equity, ethics and empowerment.As an Associate Professor in Public Health and Health Promotion in the Curtin School of Population Health, Gemma holds roles as Director of Graduate Research and Course Coordinator for the Master of Public Health. Gemma is Deputy Director with the Collaboration for Evidence Research and Impact in Public Health (CERIPH) where, as a social scientist, she supervises students and undertakes collaborative, community-facing and real-world research and evaluation using applied, qualitative and mixed methods. A proud pracademic, Gemma has previously worked within health services and across large organisations in government, private, resources, tertiary and not for profit sectors.She currently works as a researcher and evaluator with a range of local, national and international stakeholders on a range of projects in the intersections of social, political, ecological and commercial determinants, including youth justice, climate change, gambling, alcohol, domestic and family violence and housing, particularly in the context of gender, sexuality, migration and culture. Her scholarship of teaching interests lie primarily in encouraging students to explore diverse and challenging contexts, work-integrated learning, development of professional identity and leadership, pathways to practice and competency development. She manages several research and evaluation multi-year projects including the Drowning Prevention, Evidence and Evaluation (DEEP) Project, the Sexual Health and Blood Borne Virus Applied Research and Evaluation Network (SiREN) and national Community of Practice for Action on HIV and Mobility (CoPAHM). In these roles Gemma focuses on supporting sector capacity for research and evaluation. Gemma is also the lead researcher for the Odyssey Migration and Mobility Public Health Research Hub.Gemma is a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy UK and an IUHPE Registered Health Promotion Practitioner and founding member of Women in Public Health. She is the Immediate Past National President of the Australian Health Promotion Association (AHPA) (a role she held for 10 years). In 2020 Gemma was recognised for meritorious service as the youngest Life Member of the Australian Health Promotion Association.
