Various non-proprietary and proprietary activities, results, and methods for the development of a high-performance jump ski for the company Flyman Skis were completed by the Florida Polytechnic University Engineering Senior Design 2 team members Geoff Doback, Noah Poimboeuf, Troy Hair, and Alan Souto. A first-of-its-kind advanced composite layup was developed which demonstrated optimal fatigue/strength properties and ductility for water impacts from approximately 10 feet high at forward velocities of approximately 25 mph. This was completed through the extensive use of finite element analysis explicit dynamics and computational fluid dynamics simulations, in conjunction with rapid design iterations and real-world testing with a stress-deriving measurement device attached. Parameters to accurately measure impact stresses were experimentally derived through lab testing. Flyman Skis is planning on selling jump skis starting in May 2020 which will retail for less than half the cost of top competitors in the industry.- Faculty choice award
Lead Propulsion Engineer
• Coordinated/performed thermal and structural analyses in ANSYS, in addition to performing post-test examination, analyses, and reporting.• Performed analysis on rocket components using finite element analysis and computational fluid dynamics.• Designed optimum nozzle to idealize performance using Matlab and CAD. • Developed aerospike nozzle variation.• Hands-on experience designing and fabricating solid/hybrid rocket motors• Additively manufactured components such as nosecone and grid fins, and collaborated with aerodynamics/simulations team to test them. • Owned development of a machined load cell used for up to 1,750 lbf thrust (safety factor: 3.5) from stainless steel, wrote data collection program in C, and wired all electronic components - reducing load cell cost by a factor of 10. • Assisted in the design and welding of test stand used for hot fire test. • Developed quality function deployment charts and wrote reports for engineering data and designs.
Teaching Assistant
Undergraduate Researcher (Nasa-Fsgc)
• Synthesized a one-of-a-kind composite used to sustainably capture CO2 for crew capsules in space as a cheaper, simpler alternative to the CDRA system used on the International Space Station. • Modeled and 3D printed gas cell using to test system efficiency.• Collaborated with composites researchers to explore options of implementing sample into spacecraft fuselages for enhanced specific strength.• Paper submitted for publication
Thermal Analysis Intern - Propulsion Systems
Assisted development of the Space Launch System (SLS) at NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center. Main work included:• Propulsion thermal and fluid analysis for verification of propulsion systems.• Developed MATLAB programs for prediction of thermally-induced defects in self-reacting friction stir welded metal alloys used for the SLS core stage.• Designed Thermal Desktop finite element models that simulated the friction stir weld process and determined the minimum development article width to match thermal effects experienced on high-fidelity production configurations for the SLS rocket. • Completed transient thermal analysis of cryogenic Structural Heat Intercept, Insulation and Vibration Evaluation Rig (SHIIVER) 4-meter liquid hydrogen test tank (NASA eCryo Project) which resolved anomaly • Conducted thermal analyses on LH2 tank based on cryogenic to ambient propellant temperature ranges, with variable tank wall and insulation foam thicknesses.• Determined time-dependent power input to LH2 tank heater so as to not exceed thermal stability of insulation foam. • Developed dimensionless models to reduce sensitivities experienced when transferring weld schedules/tools between NASA MSFC and Michoud VAC.• Validated numerical/thermal models with infrared imaging and thermocouple data from test articles.
